Chinese Propaganda Posters: From the Collection of Michael Wolf
MIN Anchee, DUO Duo & LANDSBERGER R. Stefan

245 x 370mm 240pp

With his smooth, warm, red face which radiated light in all directions, Chairman Mao Zedong was a fixture in Chinese propaganda posters produced between the birth of the People's Republic in 1949 and the early 1980s. These infamous posters were, in turn, central fixtures in Chinese homes, railway stations, schools, journals, magazines, and just about anywhere else where people were likely to see them. Chairman Mao, portrayed as a stoic superhero (a.k.a. the Great Teacher, the Great Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Supreme Commander), appeared in all kinds of situations (inspecting factories, smoking a cigarette with peasant workers, standing by the Yangzi River in a bathrobe, presiding over the bow of a ship, or floating over a sea of red flags), flanked by strong, healthy, ageless men and "masculinized" women and children wearing baggy, sexless, drab clothing. The goal of each poster was to show the Chinese people what sort of behavior was considered morally correct and how great the future of Communist China would be if everyone followed the same path toward utopia by uniting together. Combining fact and fiction in a way typical of propaganda art, these posters exuded positive vibes and seemed to suggest that Mao was an omnipresent force that would accompany China to happiness and greatness. This book brings together a selection of colorful propaganda artworks and cultural artifacts from photographer Michael Wolf's vast collection of Chinese propaganda posters, many of which are now extremely rare. 'This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date single volume account of Chinese painting from prehistoric times to the present. For some time to come, it will be an indispensable work for students and the general reader who wishes to gain an in-depth knowledge of Chinese painting. Not least among the merits of the book are the numerous illustrations and discussions of important paintings in Chinese museums hitherto little known outside China. This book, which is the first in the Culture and Civilization of China series, augurs well for the success of this significant and far reaching collaborative effort between scholars in and outside China. Folksongs & Papercuts (Chinese-English edition)

250 x 150mm 100pp

The folksongs and papercuts of the loess plateau in northern Shaanxi Province are manifestations of ancient dreams and actual events in one of the oldest areas of China. This book presents some of the best examples of original papercut designs, each accompanied by a selection from the folksong that inspired it and a musical score. In addition, the complete lyrics of each folksongs as it was original sung, and a full translation are provided. Background Information: Folksongs: Folksongs of northern Shaanxi have been passed down and sung by people through hundreds of years in an area where people inhabited caves excavated in the mountains and lived by subsistence farming. Men cultivated land, herded sheep and cattle or went to work in the west regions to eke out a living. Women spent their lives in the cave dwellings, taking care of their husbands and bringing up children. In this environment, men could?t help singing what they heard, saw and thought; women chanted their joys and sorrows as they sat sewing under dim oil lamps. An important contribution to the vitality of northern Shaanxi folksongs is that their lyrics and melodies are all improvised, their composers and singers all local people. The songs tell stories of an inner world and real life in simple spoken language, with sincere heartfelt emotions and lively rhythms. The themes cover a wide range of subjects including social inequality and the cruelty of war, but many of the best-known folksongs are love songs. Papercuts: One of the most popular folk art forms of China, papercuts have been created throughout the ages by skilled hands using various styles influenced by different life experiences, and each expresses similar subjects and themes in varying ways. The papercuts of northern Shaanxi are the most famous, characterised by their bold and vigorous style and lively appearance, with no particular conformity in pattern. They are made using scissors only. Images seen today feature domestic animals, auspicious wishes, fertility symbols, local customs and folk tales. *Contemporary Public Art in China: A Photographic Tour
YOUNG John T.

110 colour illustrations, map, index. Was $56.95. NOW $18.95. 160pp

More than 10,000 public artworks have been created in the People's Republic of China since its establishment in 1949. They range from the ubiquitous Chairman Mao statues, to immense monuments and murals commemorating revolutionary uprisings, to abstract pieces inspired by international artistic trends. Eighty-three of the most intriguing of these works are featured here by American sculptor John Young, who travelled to dozens of Chinese cities, photographing public artworks and interviewing artists and arts administrators. Comments gleaned from these interviews, along with information about subjects and settings, are woven into the text accompanying the color photographs. The artists, ranging in age from twenty to over seventy, discuss how they view their art, how it is commissioned, the conditions under which they work, and especially the collaborative efforts through which much of it has been created. Such sujects as art education, the influence of Western art, and the position of women artists in China are also touched on. Young introduces us to examples of portrait art featuring political figures, such as the famous collaborative marble carving of Mao Zedong in the Memorial Hall at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and others that depict anonymous subjects, such as Situ Zhaoguang's playful sculpture - located on a Beijing traffic island amid busy streets - of a girl engrossed in reading a book, plugging her ears to the noise. China's rich ethnic culture is evident in works such as Yuan Yungsheng's mural at the Beijing airport, portraying the Dai people's Water Splashing Festival (whose nude bather was censored until recently and covered over by plywood). Folklore serves as the inspiration for works such as the collaborative granite sculpture Five Rams in Guangzhou, while historical figures and events from imperial China are the subjects of many works, such as Silk Road, a massive sculpture by Ma Gaihu and others marking the Chinese end of the ancient trade route. Many public artworks illustrate China's twentieth-century military struggles, including resistance to the Japanese invasion during World War II and the civil war betwen the Nationalists and Communists. The Arts of China 1600-1900
WATSON William & HO Chuimei

285 x 215mm, 300 illustrations 320pp

In this volume, William Watson and Ho Chuimei begin with discussions of 'fine' art and painting and progress to an analysis of carving and sculpture, ceramics, glassware, and textiles. The authors demonstrate how, in the age of the Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong, the 'decorative' arts rose to prominence in a way quite unlike the western experience. Avoiding misrepresentative categorisation, they single out period styles, identify repeated phases of archaism and Buddhist art, and discuss characteristic groups of jade, ivory, ceramics, glassware, and textiles. They consider the importance of the imperial workshops and their role in developing craftsmen?s skills and encouraging the cross-over of techniques from different disciplines, and they direct attention to the compelling influence of Emperor Qianlong?s aesthetic innovations. In architecture, the vast plan and overwhelming authority of the imperial buildings is discussed in contrast with the restrained subtlety of domestic architecture and garden design, where magnificent rocks were the principal feature just as in landscape painting. The survey concludes by examining the development of East/West trade and the effects of commercialisation on Chinese arts and crafts. This is a handsome, well-illustrated book that will be a valuable and illuminating resource for all who are interested in the arts of China. William Watson is emeritus professor of Chinese art and archaeology at the University of London. Ho Chuimei is adjunct curator of East and Southeast Asian art and archaeology at the Field Museum in Chicago. (For this item please quote stock ID 27073) ISBN: 9780300107357

Artisans in Early Imperial China
BARBIERI-LOW Anthony J

111 Illustrations, 46 in colour. 111 illustrations 400pp

Early China is best known for the dazzling artifacts it has left behind. These terracotta figures, gilt-bronze lamps, and other material remnants of the Chinese past unearthed during archaeological excavations are often viewed without regard to the social context of their creation, yet they were made by real individuals who contributed greatly to the foundations of early Chinese culture. With Artisans in Early Imperial China, Anthony Barbieri-Low combines historical, epigraphic, and archaeological analysis to refocus our gaze from the glittering objects and monuments of China to the men and women who made them. This book represents the first in-depth social history of artisans in early China. How did they live? How were they trained? How did they market their products? How free were they? In this engaging and illuminating analysis, Barbieri-Low explores these artisans' lives and careers from a variety of aspects. First, he examines their position within early Chinese society, analyzing their social status, social mobility, and role in the early Chinese economy. Delving deeper, he steps into their workshops to learn how they were trained, what tools they used, and what workplace hazards they faced. Following their wares to the marketplace, he investigates some of the marketing techniques used by artisans and merchants, including such startlingly modern practices as family trademarks, rhyming jingles, and knockoffs of royal products. From the dirt and din of the marketplace, Barbieri-Low enters the rarefied air of the court, with its own visual and material culture and its own professional artisans. This court was constructed upon the backs of yet another class of artisans, the most abject, those found in labor camps and slave markets. These were the men and women who built and decorated many of the great palaces, temples, and tombs of early China. Barbieri-Low compellingly argues that the state used a cold-blooded mathematical formula to optimally exploit these coerced laborers without upsetting the balance of the economy or fostering revolt. Artisans in Early Imperial China humanizes the material remains of the past, revealing the men and women who made the beautiful artifacts we know today. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Chinese history, as well as to scholars of comparative social history, labor history, and Asian art history. Art in China (Oxford History of Art Series)
CLUNAS Craig

90 colour, 56 b&w halftones. 256pp

China boasts a history of art spanning 5,000 years and embracing a wide diversity of images and objects - from jade tablets, painted silk handscrolls and fans to ink and lacquer painting, porcelain-ware, sculpture, and calligraphy. But this rich tradition has not, until now, been fully appreciated in the West where scholars have focused their attention on sculpture, while largely ignoring those art forms most highly prized by the Chinese themselves, such as calligraphy. In Art in China, Craig Clunas marks a breakthrough in the study of the subject. Taking into account all the arts practiced in China, and drawing on recent innovative scholarship, this rich text examines the production and consumption of art in its appropriate contexts. From art found in tombs to the state-controlled art of the Mao Zedong era, Art in China offers a novel look and comprehensive examination of all aspects of Chinese art. Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art
WU Hung

160pp

When it is completed in 2009 the Three Gorges Dam, a hydroelectric dam which spans the Yangzi River in China, will generate enough electricity to power four cities the size of Los Angeles. Despite the fact that it will drastically reduce coal consumption and eliminate 100 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, the project is entwined in controversy. Since construction began in 1994, nearly one thousand neighboring towns and villages have been submerged and over one million people have been displaced by the dam?s 375-mile reservoir. With Displacement, the University of Chicago?s Smart Museum of Art extends a series of exhibition catalogs produced in conjunction with renowned Chinese art scholar and curator Wu Hung. This fascinating project reveals how four leading Chinese artists?Chen Qiulin, Liu Xiaodong, Yun-Fei Ji, and Zhuang Hui?have confronted the Three Gorges Dam, employing a variety of contemporary techniques to respond to the massive forced migration of people, the demolition of ancient architecture, and the devastation of the local landscape. Alongside the catalog?s lavish illustrations are three essays, penned by Wu Hung, Stephanie Smith, and Jason McGrath, which range in topic from contemporary art and environmental sustainability to Chinese film and its treatment of the dam. In addition, interviews conducted with each of the artists offer insight into their work and address the difficult task of relating artistic practice to the wider world. About the Author Wu Hung is the Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor, director for the Center for the Art of East Asia, and consulting curator at the Smart Museum of Art, all at the University of Chicago. Stephanie Smith is the director of collections and exhibtions and the curator of contemporary art at the Smart Museum. Scenes along the River during the Qingming Festival
ZHANG Zeduan

This painting is the best genre painting in the history of Chinese painting. Scenes along the River during the Qingming Festival depicts the hustle and bustle of town life in what is today?s Kaifeng, then known as Bianjing, the capital of Northern Song Dynasty. This twelfth century painting brings to life the town and the natural scenery along the banks of the Bian River on the day of the Qingming Festival. It is a masterpiece of realism, recording the pulses of a thriving historical town and showing extraordinary details of the bridge, the carriage, the costumes, and the activities of various walks of life. Because of its detailed, vivid, and all-inclusive description, the painting has served as an extremely important source of visual material for the study of Chinese urban life in the twelfth century. It was painted by Zhang Zeduan, nicknamed Zhengdao, a native of Dongwu in what is today?s Zhucheng, Shandong Province. He was a court painter during the reign of Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty. The original paintings are presently preserved in The Palace Museum in Beijing. (For this item please quote stock ID 30398) ISBN: 9781602200036

LIU Jinglong (editor)

295 x 225mm. 200pp

The Longmen Grottoes, one of China?s three largest treasure troves of stone carvings, are located in the Loyang, Henan Province. They came into existence during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty when the capital was moved from Shanxi?s Pingcheng to Loyang (493 AD). The grottoes house 2345 niches and more than 10,000 sculptures with Buddhist themes as well other subjects. Twenty Stone Inscriptions depicts some representative works of Wei tablet calligraphy. Rather than following the old practice of simply publishing tablet rubbings, this book contains both statute carving inscriptions and photographs of niches to display not only the calligraphy but also the design and decorative aspects of the niches as a whole. Dark Writing
CARTER Paul

328pp

We do not see empty figures and outlines; we do not move in straight lines. Everywhere we are surrounded by dapple; the geometry of our embodied lives is curviform, meandering, bi-pedal. Our personal worlds are timed, inter-positional, and contingent. But nowhere in the language of cartography and design do these ordinary experiences appear. This, Dark Writing argues, is a serious omission because they are designs on the world: architects and colonizers use their lines to construct the places where we will live. But the rectilinear streets, squares, and public spaces produced in this way leave out people and the entire environmental history of their coming together. How, this book asks, can we explain the omission of bodies from maps and plans? And how can we redraw the lines maps and plans use so that the qualitative world of shadows, footprints, comings and goings, and occasions all essential qualities of places that incubate sociality can be registered? In short, Dark Writing asks why we represent the world as static when our experience of it is mobile. It traces this bias in Enlightenment cartography, in inductive logic, and in contemporary place design. This is the negative critique. Its positive argument is that, when we look closely at these designs on the world, we find traces of a repressed movement form. Even the ideal lines of geometrical figures turn out to contain traces of earlier passages; and there are many forms of graphic design that do engage with the dark environment that surrounds the light of reason. How can this dark writing so important to reconfiguring our world as a place of meeting, of co-existence and sustaining diversity be represented? And how, therefore, can our representations of the world embody more sensuously the mobile histories that have produced it? Dark Writing answers these questions using case studies: the exemplary case of the beginnings of the now world-famous Papunya Tula Painting Movement (Central Australia) and three high-profile public place-making initiatives in which the author was involved as artist and thinker. These case studies are nested inside historical chapters and philosophical discussions of the line and linear thinking that make Dark Writing both a highly personal book and a narrative with wide general appeal. 71 illus., 21 in color, 4 maps Paul Carter is professorial research fellow in the faculty of architecture, building, and planning at the University of Melbourne.
