Straits Chinese Porcelain
HO Wing Meng

The term Straits Chinese Porcelain refers specifically to a little known category of nineteenth century polychrome enamelled export porcelain exclusively made for Straits born Chinese whose ancestors first settled in Malacca at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Most extant pieces may however be dated between 1821and 1920. Straits Chinese porcelain differs from the traditional types of wares made in China not only in the shapes of potting but also in the style of the decorative designs. Despite its distinctively ornate appearance, Straits Chinese porcelain is decorated with but one recurrent theme, namely the phoenix and tree peony design. Equally remarkable is the fact that the shapes are starkly functional and simple, with no eccentric shapes or excessive ornament. This book also sheds light on some previously little known varieties, namely some blue and white ware, a small group of enamelled Yi-Hsing ware and some Japanese variants. The Chinese Potter: A Practical History of Chinese Ceramics
MEDLEY Margaret

240 x 175mm. 288pp

China has the longest and most highly developed ceramic tradition in the world, encompassing early Neolithic earthenwares, the finely glazed stoneware pieces of the Song period, and the years of Imperial patronage and export ware for the new markets of the West. Most studies of Chinese art deal with types, period or styles, but this historical examination of Chinese ceramics, which uses recent research, explains how the evolution of pottery depended upon the technological developments of the Chinese culture. The book's practical approach makes full use of archaeological reports to show how differing geographical areas, materials and developing technology all shaped the evolution of Chinese ceramics.
