| The Australian People: An Encyclopedia of the Nations, Its People & Their Origins
JUPP James (editor) 318 x 224mm; 7 line diagrams, 302 half-tones, 100 colour plates, 15 tables, 48 maps. 960pp The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Profusely illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australian as a political entity has attained the centenary of its federation. A first edition, which appeared in 1988, quickly became recognised as the standard reference and for many smaller ethnic groups the only reliable resource. This new edition incorporates data from the 1996 Census, gives greater weight to immigrants from outside Europe, and provides some fascinating essays on 'Building a Nation' in the final section. This unique reference will appeal to both a general and an academic audience. Contains profiles of the many and various ethnic, cultural & racial groups that, together, make up what it means to be Australian. Has a very good and substantial section devoted to Australians of Chinese descent. 'The Australian People is a reference of exceptional importance. Over recent years we have learned much, especially in Aboriginal history, and also in the story of imperial settlements, the convict system, and our extraordinary transition to multiculturalism. The Australian People is masterly in organisation, and its wealth of detail compelling. We remain in James Jupp?s debt' ? | Unfolding History, Evolving Identity: The Chinese in New Zealand
MANYING I. P. (editor) 280pp The only book that comprehensively covers the fortunes of Chinese immigrants in New Zealand from the earliest encounters in the mid-1800s, to the present day (including transnationalism) offering valuable data and expert viewpoints for international study and comparision. A timely book that will strike chords with the Chinese communiities in Australia, Canada and the United States, because of the strikingly similar exieriences of members of those communities at the hands of colonial governments and sometimes xenophobic societies. Designed as a sourcebook that provides both fact and analysis about the Chinese - about whom there still exist so much myth and mis-information. A joint effort by a group of expert contributors - sociologists, psychologists, historians, archaeologists, educationists, experts in ethnic studies, journalists etc. Since the 1860s, the Chinese have been the largest non-European and non-Polynesian ethnic group in New Zealand. A highly visible minority, they did not fit into the colonial image of a 'better Britain', and were harshly excluded from political discourse, socially marginalised and often victimised. The revival in the 1990s of racist myths and stereotypes directed at the new wave of Chinese immigrants is a deeply disturbing aspect of 21st century social attitudes, an echo of Australasia's chequered history of race relations. The historical topics covered range from the Chinese on the goldfields, which reflects the experiences of Chinese in Victoria and California, to studies of settler families. Later chapters discuss aspects of recent Chinese immigration, such as transnationalism and the underemployment of skilled people. A final section discusses the political strategies adopted by the Chinese, including an analysis of the search for an apology for the wrongs inflicted by the historical poll tax, which New Zealand introduced after the Sydney Intercolonial Conference of 1881 and in which it was quickly followed by the governments of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and, in 1885, by the Canadian government. The contributors bring to this book an outsider-insider viewpoint: three of the contributors are Pakehas, four are local-born Chinese New Zealanders, three are immigrants form different places (PRC, Hong Kong and Malaysia), one is a first-generation Chinese New Zealander and one is Maori-Chinese. Each also brings his or her academic discipline and the different viewpoints nurtured by their various expertises - in history, archaeology, law, journalism and other social sciences.
