| Wit & Humour from Old Cathay
KOWALLIS Jon (translator) . 214pp The thieving cook, the hypocritical monk, the medical charlatan, the tyrannical official, the miserly host and his gluttonous guest: these, along with flashes of pure wit that have a universal appeal regardless of place and time, are just some of the characters to be found and savoured in this selection of classical Chinese humour. Culled from a diversity of Ming and Qing dynasty sources, these stories combine the zany, the facetious and the sublimely eccentric to shed light on the seamy side of life, to deflate pomposity and revel in sheer absurdity. Even the more typical offerings, with their tendency towards the bawdy and the grotesque, should delight the general reader as well as the folklorist and student of China with their living evocation of a robust society often overlooked in literary studies of the period. | Wit & Humour from Ancient China: 100 Cartoons by Ding Cong
DING Cong 205 x 180mm. 220pp Consists of 100 cartoons reflecting the ignorance, stupidity and other irrational phenomena that exist in present day Chinese society. Ding Cong is an all-round artist but above all a brilliant cartoonist and illustrator. His illustrations in this book are not merely amusing but forceful and though provoking. Over the years he has evolved a distinctive style and simplified his compositions. His works appear regularly in Chinese newspaper and periodicals. All captions and headings accompanying the cartoons are bilingual (English/Chinese). Ding Cong, now 76, still signs his work Little Ding, a highly diversified artist, he is above all a brilliant cartoonist and illustrator, who from boyhood loved art. Like virtually all Chinese artists of his generation. Ding Dong has had a very chequered career. He suffered during the Anti-Japanese War. After 1957, the Anti-Rightist Movement and the 'cultural revolution' deprived him of the freedom to publish under his own name for twenty years. But the fluctuations of his fortunes have toughened him, enriched his experience and deepened his sympathy for all underdogs. In over fifty years of his career, he has drawn cartoons, illustrated stories and helped design exhibitions. His illustrations grace books by such famous writers as Lu Xun, Lao She and Mao Dun, as well as many others. When he was rehabilitated in 1979, Ding Cong determined to make up for lost time. His work is still in great demand, and his cartoons keep appearing in papers and magazines. He is always optimistic, energetic and diligent. He retains a simple, childlike heart. Thus to his readers he will be Little Ding forever. (For this item please quote stock ID 6459) ISBN: 9787800050732 |
