Learn to Write Chinese Characters
BJORKSTEN Johan 235 x 155mm 123pp This is the only introductory manual for writing Chinese characters prepared specifically for an English-speaking audience. The author guides the reader through the fundamentals of writing and introduces the different type of script used in China today - their evolution, their place in Chinese tradition and the relations among them. The book provides basic instruction in writing with a modern fountain pen rather than a brush. Only commonly used characters - both simplified and full forms - appear as examples and exercises. Also included is an explanation of how to look up characters in a Chinese dictionary. This attractive and charming book - full of anecdotes and calligraphic aphorisms - is both a useful classroom tool and an enjoyable reading experience for anyone with an interest in the language and culture of China. Three Sinogram Verses Using Radicals/Bushou Sanzijing
ZHANG Pengpeng 260 x 185mm 98pp This book consists of two sections, 'Three Sinogram Verses Using Free Radicals' and 'Three Sinogram Verses Using Bound Radicals'. The first part of 'Three Sinogram Verses Using Free Radical' presents 56 verses, which collects the most frequently-used radicals that are characters by themselves. Each verse is composed of three characters, two single characters and a combined character thereby formed. The two single characters are respectively two radicals; therefore, 112 radicals are introduced in this primer. Every four verses form a stanza, metrically precise and beautiful so as to greatly facilitate recital and memorisation. For each radical, the order of strokes as well as the example characters formed by it, are shown. For the combined characters, in addition to the introduction to forms, pronunciation and meanings, their structures and methods of formation are also explained, together with a simple illustration to their etymology. The second part, 'Three Sinogram Verses Using Bound Radicals' includes 20 verses, which mainly deals with those radicals that are not characters by themselves, but the variation of the radicals through derivation or simplification. Each verse has three characters, and each character contains a radical, thereby 60 bound radicals are introduced. Every four verses form a stanza, not only melodious, but also meaningful. Apart from the above two sections, the stroke index of the 172 radicals specified in this book is provided in the last part. In addition, the tracing exercises are designed for students to practice after class, whereas the exercises of identifying radicals could be used either in the classroom or as an assignment. The 'Radical Indexing System for Chinese Characters', though presented the last, is also an important component of this book. (For this item please quote stock ID 26229) ISBN: 9787561909973 |

| Ideogram: Chinese Characters & the Myth of Disembodied Meaning
UNGER J. Marshall 230 x 155mm; 27 illustrations. 224pp In his latest book, J. Marshall Unger exposes the historical, scientific, cultural, and practical flaws accompanying the widespread belief that Chinese characters embody pure, language-less meaning. Whether one is interested in Chinese characters from the standpoint of language, literature, semiotics, psychology, history, cultural studies, or computers, Ideogram contains new ideas and insights that are sure to challenge preconceptions and provoke thought. 'In this informative and entertaining book, once and for all, J. Marshall Unger thoroughly demolishes the notion that Chinese characters directly convey meaning without any reference to specific languages and cultural contexts. To do so, he unleashes an amazing array of weapons, ranging from the perceptions of a famous comedian, the techniques of specialists in memorisation, the secrets of shorthand, the mysteries of probability, computer science, and artificial intelligence, to the profundities of philosophy. With a razor-sharp mind and deft pen, he exposes the self-contradictory folly of those who would assert some sort of independent, transcendental status for Chinese characters. Anyone who reads this book from beginning to end - parts of it are easy and fun, others are challenging and demanding - will surely come to the same conclusion as the author: in reality, there is no such thing as an ideogram' - from the foreword by Victor Mair. J. Marshall Unger is professor of Japanese and chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Ohio State University. The Origins of Chinese Characters
WANG Hongyuan 260 x 185mm 215pp Intended as a guide to the origins and histories of Chinese characters. Although it can be used as a Chinese etymological dictionary, the book is an attempt to find a new way to teach the practical ideography of Chinese to those whose native scripts are alphabet-based. Whether borrowed or created, a character generally begins life in Chinese with one meaning and its ancient pronounciation. Yet no living language is static, and in time words develop a new pronunciation or meaning, and lose old ones. A look at the origins of the characters that make up the Chinese writing system involves also a look at the origins of Chinese civilisation. This profusely illustrated book shows a panorama of these fascinating characters. (For this item please quote stock ID 14019) ISBN: 9787800522437 |

Chinese Characters: Learn & Remember Learn & Remember 2,178 Characters and Their Meanings
HOENIG Alan A systematic, building block-style plan for mastering the most daunting aspect of learning Chinese - how to remember the meaning of more than 2,000 of the most common characters - is provided in this handbook. Beginning with the simplest of strokes, such as those for numbers, scepter, and earth, and progressing to the extremely complex, such as destroy, insert, and mouse, this manual presents a methodology employing memory techniques to associate meanings with the characters? visual components. A sequence of numbered panels displays each character in two font styles, and a notation in the adjacent margin describes the character?s pinyin pronunciation. Graphics that identify the components or characters from which the featured characters are drawn, and a listing of both the names of these root components, and the panel numbers that cite their location in the book augment the presentation. Beginners will be best served by using this guide in conjunction with the development of language skills, while those who are familiar with the language will find this book to be a comprehensive reference and refresher. |

Remembering Simplified Hanzi: Book 1, How Not to Forget the Meaning and Writing of Chinese Characters
HEISIG, James W. & RICHARDSON, Timothy W. 432pp At long last the approach that has helped thousands of learners memorize Japanese kanji has been adapted to help students with Chinese characters. "Book 1 of Remembering Simplified Hanzi" covers the writing and meaning of the 1,000 most commonly used characters in the simplified Chinese writing system, plus another 500 that are best learned at an early stage. (Book 2 adds another 1,500 characters for a total of 3,000.) Of critical importance to the approach found in these pages is the systematic arranging of characters in an order best suited to memorization. In the Chinese writing system, strokes and simple components are nested within relatively simple characters, which can, in turn, serve as parts of more complicated characters and so on. Taking advantage of this allows a logical ordering, making it possible for students to approach most new characters with prior knowledge that can greatly facilitate the learning process.Guidance and detailed instructions are provided along the way. Students are taught to employ 'imaginative memory' to associate each character's component parts, or 'primitive elements', with one another and with a key word that has been carefully selected to represent an important meaning of the character. This is accomplished through the creation of a 'story' that engagingly ties the primitive elements and key word together. In this way, the collections of dots, strokes, and components that make up the characters are associated in memorable fashion, dramatically shortening the time required for learning and helping to prevent characters from slipping out of memory. Learning Chinese Characters
LIU Meiru, LU Lina 221 pp Learning Chinese Characters (LCC) breaks from the mold of traditional Chinese character teaching materials by using computer-assisted character learning methods. Computers are used to add "synchronized speaking/typing" to reading and writing practice, assist students in the study of "writing," and make the study of Chinese characters more a relaxed and pleasant experience. This method makes students enthusiastic about the study and application of Chinese characters, and also facilitates rapid progress in character recognition and use. The result is that students will become determined and diligent in their pursuit of strong Chinese character skills. This result was our original goal in creating this book. This book was created with the goal of providing easy to use, practical, fast, effective, interesting, lively and clever content. The course seeks to cultivate students' integrated listening, speaking, reading, writing, translating, and typing skills, reflecting the course title to the greatest extent possible. This book is designed for four-year undergraduate programs, two-year community colleges, Confucius Institutes, and night and weekend Chinese courses in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and other English-speaking countries. They are also appropriate for self-study of Chinese characters. The book comes with 1 CD-ROM. (For this item please quote stock ID 34868) ISBN: 9787301187029 |

Fundamental Written Chinese
SANDERS Robert, YAO Nora & LEE Margaret 312pp The course set out in Fundamental Spoken Chinese and Fundamental Written Chinese provides a thorough training in all the skills that a learner needs to reach a basic level of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese as well as a solid foundation for more advanced study. Fundamental Spoken Chinese is marvellously executed. The explanations of grammar and usage are exceptionally clear, the best I’ve ever seen in a textbook. The charts used to illustrate grammatical constructions are easy to follow, and the examples are well chosen for maximal clarity. The dialogues are naturalistic and well keyed to everyday situations, as is the vocabulary. Fundamental Written Chinese has many of the same virtues as its companion volume. Like Fundamental Spoken Chinese, Fundamental Written Chinese not only teaches the content of the lesson but also inculcates habits essential for further learning. The emphasis on explaining characters explicitly in terms of radicals and phonetics is an example of the kind of approach that makes for successful advanced learners. The two books are designed to be flexible so that teachers of various approaches can use them either to introduce the spoken and written skills simultaneously or to introduce writing after the spoken language has progressed to a certain level. Teachers and learners are provided with all the basic tools needed in one well-designed package. -Mark Hansell, Carleton College |
