Ways With Words: Writing About Reading Texts from Early China
YU Pauline et al (editors)

230 x 155mm; Was $39.95. NOW $16.95 283pp

Ways with Words presents interpretive essays by scholars from different disciplines on seven core, premodern classical Chinese texts. The remarkable diversity of these works - drawn from literature, philosophy, religion, and art history - challenges the presumption of a monolithic Chinese tradition that has been promoted by scholars and popular culture alike, both in China and the West. The texts themselves include a poem from the Classic of Poetry compiled in the sixth century b.c.e.; passages from Mencius and Zhuangzi; the Heart Sutra; a poem by Du Fu and the Biography of Yingying by Yuan Zhen, both written during the Tang dynasty; and Notes on the Method for the Brush, a tenth-century text attributed to Jing Hao. Both the original Chinese versions and the translations are provided for each primary text. There are at least two essays - when possible from scholars in different fields - on each work. The volume as a whole demonstrates the various ways in which the modern Western reader can confront the impressive variety of texts from the classical Chinese tradition. The Subtle Revolution: Poets Of The 'Old Schools' During Late Qing & Early Republican China
KOWALLIS Jon

China Research Monographs 60 The Subtle Revolution treats the lives and works of figures from three established schools of poetry in China during the late Qing and early Republican eras, roughly between the years 1860-1917. These include Wang Kaiyun, Fan Zengxiang, Yi Shunding, Chen Sanli, Chen Yan, and Zheng Xiaoxu (who later served as the first Prime Minister of the puppet state Manchukuo, but was removed from office by the Japanese, who suspected him of disloyalty). Thematically, the book focuses on the question of modernity in classical-style verse and argues that modernity first entered Chinese lettres through the vehicle of classical-style poetry. Translations include (for the first time in any foreign language) both Fan Zengxiang's First and Second Songs of Rainbow Cloud (Caiyun Qu), the first literary treatment of the popular legend of Sai Jinhua, cross-cultural courtesan active in the 1890s and the Boxer Uprising. A Chinese language appendix contains the texts of all the original poems. The book contains an exhaustive index and an annotated bibliography of use to students and future researchers. Rulin Waishi & Cultural Transformation in Late Imperial China
SHANG Wei

230 x 155mm. 325pp

Rulin Waishi (The Unofficial History of the Scholars) is more than a landmark in the history of the Chinese novel. This 18th-century work, which was deeply embedded in the intellectual and literary discourses of its time, challenges the reader to come to grips with the mid-Qing debates over ritual and ritualism, and the construction of history, narrative, and lyricism. Wu Jingzi's (1701-54) ironic portrait of literati life was unprecedented in its comprehensive treatment of the degeneration of mores, the predicaments of official institutions, and the Confucian elite's futile struggle to reassert moral and cultural authority. Like many of his fellow literati, Wu found the vernacular novel an expressive and malleable medium for discussing elite concerns. Through a close reading of Rulin Waishi, Shang Wei seeks to answer such questions as: What accounts for the literati's enthusiasm for writing and reading novels? Does this enthusiasm bespeak a conscious effort to develop a community of critical discourse outside the official world? Why did literati authors eschew publication? What are the bases for their social and cultural criticisms? How far do their criticisms go, given the authors' alleged Confucianism? And if literati authors were interested solely in recovering moral and cultural hegemony for their class, how can we explain the irony found in their works? Women Writers of Traditional China: An Anthology of Poetry & Criticism
CHANG Kang-i Sun & SAUSSY Haun (editors)

3 maps. 928pp

This anthology of Chinese women?s poetry in translation brings together representative selections from the work of some 130 poets from the Han dynasty to the early 20th century. To measure the development of Chinese women?s poetry, one must take into account not only the poems but also the prose writings ? prefaces, biographies, theoretical tracts ? that framed them and attempted to shape women?s writing as a distinct category of literature. To this end, the anthology contains an extended section of criticism by and about women writers. These poets include empresses, imperial concubines, courtesans, grandmothers, recluses, Buddhist nuns, widows, painters, farm wives, revolutionaries, and adolescent girls thought to be incarnate immortals. Some women wrote out of isolation and despair, finding in words a mastery that otherwise eluded them. Others were recruited into poetry by family members, friends, or sympathetic male advocates. Some dwelt on intimate family matters and cast their poems as addresses to husbands and sons at large in the wide world of men?s affairs. Each woman had her own reasons for poetry and her own ways of appropriating, and often changing, the conventions of both men?s and women?s verse. The primary purpose of this anthology is to put before the English-speaking reader evidence of the poetic talent that flourished, against all odds, among women in premodern China. It is also designed to spur reflection among specialists in Chinese poetry, inspiring new perspectives on both the Chinese poetic tradition and the canon of female poets within that tradition. This partial history both connects with and departs from the established patterns for women?s writing in the West, thus complementing current discussions of 'feminine writing'. The Late Poems of Meng Chiao
HINTON David (translator)

. 76pp

Late in life, Meng Chiao (A.D. 751-814) developed an experimental poetry of virtuosic beauty, a poetry that anticipated landmark developments in the modern Western tradition by a millennium. With the T'ang dynasty crumbling, Meng's later work employed surrealist and symbolist techniques as it turned to a deep introspection. This is truly major work - work that may be the most radical in the Chinese tradition. And though written more than a thousand years ago, it is remarkably fresh and contemporary. But, in spite of Meng's significance, this is the first volume of his poetry to appear in English. Until the age of forty, Meng Chiao lived as a poet-recluse associated with Ch'an (Zen) poet-monks in south China. He then embarked on a rather unsuccessful career as a government official. Throughout this time, his poetry was decidedly mediocre, conventional verse inevitably undone by his penchant for the strange and surprising. After his retirement, Meng developed the innovative poetry translated in this book. His late work is singular not only for its bleak introspection and 'avant-garde' methods, but also for its dimensions: in a tradition typified by the short lyric poem, this work is made up entirely of large poetic sequences. One of the most original - and controversial - figures in the history of Chinese literature, Li Yu specialised in challenging social taboos and turning traditional literary themes on their heads. The stories featured here combine the racy wit and bawdiness of the traditional oral story-teller with a very modern blend of subtlety, irony and psychological insight to create a vibrant and accessible picture of 17th century Chinese life. This illustrated collection is an important step in bringing the writing of Li Yu to a wider audience. Here is a compelling example of vibrancy and insight only now being rediscovered by contemporary Chinese writers. The Travels of Lao Can was written by Liu E, a brilliant intellectual born into a scholarly family at the end of the Qing dynasty. By describing what Lao Can sees and hears on his travels, the author fiercely attacked the injustices he witnessed and exposed so-called 'honest and upright officials' as hypocrites who tried to rise to power at the expense of the people. Written in 1905, The Travels of Lao Can has been circulating for a century and readers think highly of Liu E's mastery of language. The use of language, observations and detailed descriptions all show the author's originality. Among late Qing-dynasty novels, The Travels of Lao Can is, artistically, a prominent work. Another famous work by Qing dynasty writer Pu Songling. This selection of fifty-one stories (from an original 500 pieces) cover a wide range of subjects - were foxes and fish spirits and ghosts and monsters that are personified. Like human beings, they have characteristics of good and evil, beauty and ugliness, love and hatred, as well as happiness and discontent. These mystical stories reflect the social life of the time in which they were written. Living under a feudal monarchy, the writer has criticized the unfairness of feudalism, and expressed his indignation by writing of fox spirits and monsters. Although most of these stories are progressive and written with a critical slant, some of them still are influence by superstition and fatalism. Li Yu was the last ruler of a small kingdom which existed for a short time (939-975 AD) in the confused historical period between the fall of the Tang Dynasty and the establishment of Song dynastic rule over the whole of China. He was a distinguished poet, painter and calligrapher. It is his poetry that is collected and translated in this book. Many of his poems are known by heart by millions of Chinese people. However, they are little known outside China and the communities that make up the Chinese diaspora. His poetry is written directly from the heart about his observations and emotions in simple lyrical language, although there are occasional flashes of passion. Li Yu?s poetry is relatively free of the historical allusions and scholarly references that characterise a good deal of Chinese poetry but which make little sense to a modern reader either in Chinese or in English. This book contains those poems of Li Yu that have survived the millennium that separates us from him, together with some samples of his calligraphy. An additional feature that characterises this book is that all poems are presented in English, modern Chinese characters, and pinyin, making it a valuable language-learning aid as well as a beautifully presented book of poetry. The author: Dr. Clifford Pannam, QC, is a barrister in practice at the Victorian Bar. His interest in China and Chinese literature was first aroused in 1965 when he went to Hong Kong for six months as the research member of a Committee of Inquiry which recommended the establishment of what is now the Law School of Hong Kong University. At that time he was fortunate to be able to visit a China that was experiencing the last years of the Cultural Revolution. Since that time he has travelled widely throughout China. He also has been a keen observer of the development of the modern Chinese legal system. However, it is his interest in the Chinese language and in the poetry, art and calligraphy of the Tang and Song dynasties that have produced this book. The Marshes of Mount Liang, Part 1: The Broken Seals
SHI Nai'an & LUO Guanzhong

215 x 140mm. 448pp

A new translation of the Chinese classical novel generally known as The Water Margin. When Marshal Hong breaks the seals - which generations of Taoist Masters have placed on the temple doors to hold back 108 incarcerated Demon Princes - powerful forces of disorder are released. One after another, brave men fall out with officialdom and are obliged to join the brotherhood of the rivers and lakes, the mixed company of heroes and vagabonds who live by their wits and their fighting skills. The story of The Broken Seals branches this way and that, following first one hero, then another, as their paths converge and part, until finally 108 brave - but not entirely admirable - men are united at the outlaws' stronghold in the Marshes of Mount Liang. The story takes us through the vast landscape of imperial China. We hear of epic duels, gargantuan feasts, and cunning ambushes, and we witness injustice, betrayal, murder and revenge. We are told also of the beauty of the moon during Mid-Autumn Festival or of the snow, crisp underfoot on a stormy night in the country. This volume consists of the first twenty-two chapters of the full 120-chapter version of the classic Chinese novel by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong. It is the first English translation based on this version and includes much of the verse. It offers the English reader something of the liveliness and humour of a work that has delighted generations of Chinese readers. About the Translators: John Dent-Young is a writer and translator now working from his home in England. Alex Dent-Young graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University and is presently pursuing graduate studies at the University of Chicago. The Marshes of Mount Liang, Part 3: The Gathering Company
SHI Nai'an & LUO Guanzhong

215 x 140mm. 456pp

In this volume, the company of outlaws on Mount Liang continues to grow - a butcher, a blacksmith, a public executioner, a petty thief and the usual generals defecting from the government forces. Lu Zhishen, the Flowery Monk, and his companions from Twin Dragon Peak reappear and finally join the company, uniting two important strands of the story. Some episodes are relatively light: a tiger is stolen, an innkeeper?s favourite rooster is illicitly eaten, Iron Ox is lowered to the bottom of a well and nearly gets forgotten. But in general the mood is darker. The naked body of a lecherous wife is carved up, an innocent child is mercilessly dispatched to gain a reluctant recruit. Chao Gai, the leader on Mount Liang, is killed in battle. Song Jiang replaces him, but for how long can he control his unruly forces? Despite the attraction of the life on the marshes, with its rootless freedom and rough code of honour, we are not to forget how the story was launched, when 108 Demon Princes were released in a black cloud. This new translation series by John and Alex Dent-Young is also the first English translation of the 120-chapter version of The Water Margin. The translators have made the English translation as readable to English readers as possible by finding meaningful equivalents for many local terms and proverbial expressions, while aiming to retain some flavour of other times and customs. Readers in the West, even with no specialised knowledge of Chinese, will certainly enjoy the stories and characters presented in the novel. The Marshes of Mount Liang, Part 2: The Tiger Killers
SHI Nai'an & LUO Guanzhong

215 x 140mm. 456pp

The Tiger Killers is the second volume of a new translation of this Chinese classical novel. Like the first volume, The Broken Seals, it follows the fortunes of various outlaw heroes as they move through a world of treacherous officials, jealous toadies, bullying gaolers, hired assassins, foolhardy generals and cannibalistic innkeepers. This volume contains some of the most famous scenes in the novel, starting with the episode in which Wu Song gets drunk at the tavern, ascends the pass in late evening and kills a notorious man-eating tiger with his bare hands. His subsequent encounter with his midget brother's flirtatious wife, Jinlian or Golden Lotus, and her vain attempt to seduce him lead into a tale of adultery, callous murder and bloody vengeance. The second half of the book is concerned with Song Jiang's attempts to serve out his prison sentence honourably and avoid becoming an outlaw, until he is unjustly condemned to death for a misconstrued poem. Towards the end of this volume we meet the violent Li Kui, variously known as Iron Ox or Black Whirlwind, who also turns out to have a way with tigers. This volume consists of chapters 23 to 43 of the full 120-chapter version of the novel by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong. It is the first English translation based on this version. A Chinese Bestiary: Strange Creatures from the Guideways Through Mountains & Seas
STRASSBERG Richard E.

255 x 175mm, 76 b&w plates, 37 b&w illustrations. 360pp

A Chinese Bestiary presents a fascinating pageant of mythical creatures from a unique and enduring cosmography written in ancient China. The Guideways Through Mountains & Seas, compiled between the fourth and first centuries B.C.E., contains descriptions of hundreds of fantastic denizens of mountains, rivers, islands, and seas, along with minerals, flora, and medicine. The text also represents a wide range of beliefs held by the ancient Chinese. Richard Strassberg brings the Guideways to life for modern readers by weaving together translations from the work itself with information from other texts and recent archaeological finds to create a lavishly illustrated guide to the imaginative world of early China. Unlike the bestiaries of the late medieval period in Europe, the Guideways was not interpreted allegorically; the strange creatures described in it were regarded as actual entities found throughout the landscape. The work was originally used as a sacred geography, as a guidebook for travellers, and as a book of omens. Today, it is regarded as the richest repository of ancient Chinese mythology and shamanistic wisdom. The Guideways may have been illustrated from the start, but the earliest surviving illustrations are woodblock engravings from a rare 1597 edition. Seventy-six of those plates are reproduced here for the first time, and they provide a fine example of the Chinese engraver's art during the late Ming dynasty. This beautiful volume, compiled by a well-known specialist in the field, provides a fascinating window on the thoughts and beliefs of an ancient people, and will delight specialists and general readers alike. The third section is concerned with the count's various attempts to subdue Mount Liang by force or win them over with an amnesty. The fourth section begins with the granting of the amnesty and the first campaign in the Emperor's service against the Liao Tartars. A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers
HSIAO Li-hung

. 320pp

'Without indulging in either anti-foreign or anti-mainlander sentiments, A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers assures the reader that Taiwanese folk culture and local Chinese traditions...can provide all of the wisdom necessary for dealing with emotional crises like the death of a loved one and a sundered love relationship' ? World Literature Today. Winner of the 1980 United Daily Literature Competition, this novel about love, betrayal, family life, and the power of tradition in small-town Taiwan was an instant bestseller when first published in Taiwan. At once a bittersweet romance and a vividly detailed portrait of life in a southern Taiwanese coastal town in the 1970s, A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers captures the intimacy of agricultural life in the midst of an increasingly industrialised society. At the heart of the story is Zhenguan, a sensitive young woman whose coming of age is influenced by new experiences in the city, the wisdom of her elders, and her strong, unique identity. In Zhenguan´s journey of first love, suffering, disillusionment, and - ultimately - zenlike triumph, Hsiao Li-hung celebrates the values and traditions that have sustained and nurtured life in Taiwan through the centuries. With understated elegance, Hsiao Li-hung´s lyrical work affirms a way of life both fleeting and enduring. For readers interested in Chinese literature and culture, and anyone who enjoys a rich family saga, this is a unique and beautifully told story. Water Margin, Volumes 1-2 (Abridged)
SHIH Nai'an

209 x 140mm. 917pp

This is one of the best known and loved of the ancient Chinese novels. It tells why and how some hundred odd men and women banded together on a mountain in what is today's Shandong Province, became leaders of an outlaw army of thousands and fought brave and resourceful battles against pompous, heartless tyrants. Their rebellious deeds struck a responsive chord in the oppressed masses and gradually evolved into folk legends. This abridged version makes this novel more accessible to English readers. In the first volume, Emergence of the Demons, you will witness how demons were released from the Hall of Subdued Demons, how Shi Jin captured Chen Da, why Lu Da became a monk and was given the religious name Lu Zhishen, and how Lin Chong was framed by Gao Qiu and exiled to Cangzhou. In the second volume, Marsh at the Foot of Liangshan, you will witness why Yang Zhi tried to sell his sword and killed a rogue in Bianliang, how Wu Yong took a convoy of birthday presents by strategy on the Ridge of Yellow Earth, how the Ruan brothers fought He Tao, and how Lin Chong was forced to seize the waterside stronghold out of true fraternity. Tracking the Banished Immortal: The Poetry of Li Bo & Its Critical Reception
VARSANO Paula M.

230 x 155mm 368pp

Li Bo (701-762), has long inspired controversy among readers and critics. Known even during his lifetime as the 'Banished Immortal,' he continues to spark imaginations, challenge passionately held convictions about poetic values, and maintain, alongside Du Fu, his position as 'one of China's two greatest poets'. In this lucidly and gracefully written volume, Paula Varsano presents the first full-length study of Li Bo in English in half a century and the first extended look at the poet's critical reception. Persuaded that the essence of his poetry lay well beyond the reach of the usual modes of study and description, readers from the ninth to the 20th century developed a particularly dynamic critical language. Varsano shows how this language, evolving out of the critical concepts of 'emptiness' and 'substance,' answered the need to conceptualise shifting parameters of poetic creativity over hundreds of years. At the same time, she offers an account of Li Bo's entry into the canon and asks how this in turn transformed both the reception of his work and the transmission of his poetic persona. This story of Li Bo's critical reception and canonisation is propelled by the malleable and elusive ideal of the 'ancient'. And so, Varsano devotes the second part of her study to the poems themselves, investigating those poetic manifestations of ancientness that translated into the enduring figure of the Banished Immortal. Through close readings of his poems, she demonstrates how play and performance paradoxically augment the ancient values of expressive immediacy and genuineness. Paula Varsano is associate professor of Chinese language and literature at Smith College. (For this item please quote stock ID 21159) ISBN: 9780824825737

A Chinese Literary Mind: Culture, Creativity, & Rhetoric in Wenxin diaolong
ZONG-QI Cai

. 336pp

Wenxin diaolong by Liu Xie (ca. 465-ca. 521) is arguably the most complex and comprehensive work of literary criticism in ancient China. For centuries it has intrigued and inspired Chinese literati, and modern English-speaking scholars have also found it an important source for inquiries into traditional Chinese poetics and aesthetics. The present volume of 10 essays is the first book-length study in English of this classic work. The first two parts of the book focus on cultural traditions, showing how Liu canonised the Chinese literary tradition, assessing where Liu?s work stands in that tradition, and demonstrating his debts to the intellectual currents of his time. The third part explores Liu?s theory of literary creation by using contemporary critical perspectives to analyse Liu?s conception of imagination. The fourth part presents three detailed studies of Liu?s views on rhetoric: a close reading of his chapter on rhetorical parallelism, a discussion of his own use of parallelism as a means of analysis and textual production, and an investigation of his views on changes and continuities in Chinese literary styles. The book concludes with a critical survey of Asian-language scholarship on Wenxin diaolong in this century. Contributors: Zong-qi Cai, Kang-i Sun Chang, Ronald Egan, Wai-yee Li, Shuen-fu Lin, Richard Lynn, Victor Mair, Stephen Owen, Andrew Plaks, Maureen Robertson, and Zhang Shaokang. LIBRARY of Chinese Classics: The Palace of Eternal Youth (1 Volume) (Chinese-English)
Hong Sheng

240 x 160mm.

The historical opera The Palace of Eternal Youth, written by Hong Sheng (1645-1704) in the 27th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1688), is one of the masterpieces of ancient Chinese opera. It tells the love story of Li Longji (reigned 712-756), a Tang dynasty emperor of China, and his concubine Yang Yuhuan. The story, based on historical facts, had been told for generations. Hong Sheng presented it anew in this superb, moving opera using an artistic method of interlacing reality to dream. It tells the love story between the emperor and his concubine who wished to be 'two love-birds flying wing to wing, and on earth two trees with branches twined from spring to spring.' The work also reflects the complicated contradictions and clashes within and outside the court, giving a historical picture of the joys and sorrows of the people and the rise and fall of the country at that time. It was welcomed as the most outstanding and influential among the operas based on this theme immediately after its publication, and was widely copied and performed. The opera, consisting of 50 scenes, has been translated into English, Japanese and Russian. This edition is the translation by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang from the Chinese text edited by Xu Shoufang. The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry
WEINBERGER Eliot

230 x 160mm 256pp

Modern American poets translate classical Chinese poetry. The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry is a rich compendium of translations like no other. It is the first to look at Chinese poetry through its enormous influence on American poetry, starting with Ezra Pound's Cathay (1915), and including translations by three other major US poets (William Carlos Williams, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder) and an important poet-translator-scholar (David Hinton). Moreover, it is the first general anthology ever to consider the process of translation by presenting different versions of the same poem by various translators, as well as examples of the translators rewriting themselves. The collection, at once playful and instructive, serves as an excellent introduction to the art and tradition of Chinese poetry, gathering some 250 poems by nearly 40 poets, from the anonymous early poetry through the great masters of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. The anthology also includes previously uncollected translations by Pound, a selection of essays on Chinese poetry by all five translators, some never published before in book form, and biographical notes that are a collage of poems and comments by both the American translators and the Chinese poets themselves. Translator and essayist Eliot Weinberger's first study of multiple Chinese translations was the perennially popular 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei. The Story of Han Xiangzi: The Alchemical Adventures of a Daoist Immortal
YANG Erzeng

31 illustrations 504pp

In this seventeenth-century Chinese novel, Han Xiangzi, best known as one of the Eight Immortals, seeks and achieves immortality and then devotes himself to converting his materialistic, politically ambitious Confucian uncle-Han Yu, a real historical figure-to Daoism. Written in lively vernacular prose interspersed with poems and songs, the novel takes its readers across China, to the heavens, and into the underworld. Readers listen to debates among Confucians, Daoists, and Buddhists and witness trials of faith and the performance of magical feats. In the mode of the famous religious novel Journey to the West (also known in English as Monkey), The Story of Han Xiangzi uses colorful characters, twists of plot, witty dialogue, and action suitable for a superhero comic book to convey its religious message-that worldly life is ephemeral and that true contentment can be found only through Daoist cultivation. This is the first translation into any Western language of Han Xiangzi quanzhuan (literally, The Complete Story of Han Xiangzi). On one level, the novel is a delightful adventure; on another, it is serious theology. Although The Story of Han Xiangzi's irreverent attitude toward the Confucian establishment prevented its acceptance by literary critics in imperial China, it has remained popular among Chinese readers for four centuries. Philip Clart's Introduction outlines the Han Xiangzi story cycle, presents Yang Erzeng in his social context, assesses the literary merits and religious significance of the text, and explores the theory and practice of inner alchemy. This unabridged translation will appeal to students of Chinese literature and to general readers who enjoy international fiction, as well as to readers with an interest in Daoism. Yang Erzeng (fl. 1590-1602) was a writer and publisher from the city of Hangzhou in southeastern China. Philip Clart is associate professor of religious studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia. (For this item please quote stock ID 29261) ISBN: 9780295987255

'Like a treasure chest of precious stones, the writings of Chuang Tzu shine with uncommon wisdom and insight. This new translation, which expertly preserves the humour and bite of these ancient teachings, will entice a whole new audience to read ? and reread ? Chuang Tzu's writings' - Publishers Weekly In traditional Chinese culture, the written word, along with the appreciation of it, was prized with an almost religious reverence. Poetry held a place that was unrivaled by any other single art, ability, or practical accomplishment. Poetic talent was a source of prestige and affluence and even of political power. In this rich, comprehensive collection of Chinese poetry, J. P. Seaton, the preeminent American translator and scholar of Chinese literature, introduces the reader to the main styles of Chinese poetry and the major poets, from the classic Shih Ching (The Book of Songs), which dates from 1766 BCE, to the twentieth century. Unlike many academics, Seaton has a poet's ear, and his translations here are fresh and vivid. His commentaries on the poems illuminate their historical and stylistic significance. 'J.P. Seaton's luminous translations are accurate in presenting the meaning and order of words and images from the original while revealing the true spirit of this very great poet' - Sam Hamill 'J.P. Seaton is the finest living translator and explicator of Chinese poetry. The author vividly depicted a group of "Liaozhai Studio" characters, soon to become well known throughout China, with his superb grasp of descriptive and concise writing. The strange tales have strongly satirical flavor, intermingling the supernatural with the real world, and presenting both the beautiful and ugly sides of life. Enriched by the author's powerful imagination, Strange Tales from the Liaozhai Studio is a gem in the corpus of China's classical literary works. Stories to Caution the World: Volume 2: A Ming Dynasty Collection
FENG Menglong (compiler)

771pp

Stories to Caution the World is the first complete translation of Jingshi tongyan, the second of Feng Menglong's three collections of stories which were pivotal in the development of Chinese vernacular fiction. These tales, whose importance in the Chinese literary canon and in world literature is without question, have been compared to Boccaccio's Decameron and the stories of A Thousand and One Nights.
Feng Menglong collected popular stories from a variety of sources (some dating back centuries) and circulated them via the flourishing seventeenth-century publishing industry. He not only saved them from oblivion but elevated the status of vernacular literature and provided material for authors of the great late-Ming and Qing novels to draw upon. As in their translation of the first collection of Feng's trilogy, Stories Old and New, Shuhui and Yunqin Yang include all forty stories as well as Feng's interlinear and marginal comments and all of the verse woven throughout the stories. Sources of Chinese Tradition, Volume 1: From Earliest Times to 1600 (Second edition)

. 944pp

'The selections are excellent, translations faithful and elegant, and introductions terse and to the point. If I were asked to recommend only one book for anyone who wishes to know something about Chinese culture, I would name, without a moment of hesitation, this new edition of Sources of Chinese Tradition'. ? Yingshih Yü, Gordon Wu 1958 Professor of Chinese Studies & professor of history, Princeton University A collection of seminal primary readings on the social, intellectual, and religious traditions of China, Sources of Chinese Tradition' has been widely used and praised for almost 40 years as an authoritative resource for scholars and students and as a thorough and engaging introduction for general readers. Here at last is a completely revised and expanded edition of this classic sourcebook, compiled by noted China scholars Wm. Theodore de Bary and Irene Bloom. Updated to reflect recent scholarly developments, with extensive material on popular thought and religion, social roles, and women´s education, this edition features new translations of more than half the works from the first edition, as well as many new selections. Arranged chronologically, this anthology is divided into four parts, beginning at the dawn of literate Chinese civiliation with the Oracle-Bone inscriptions of the late Shang dynasty (15711045 B.C.E.) and continuing through the end of the Ming dynasty (C.E. 1644). Each chapter has an introduction that provides useful historical context and offers interpretive strategies for understanding the readings. The first part, The Chinese Tradition in Antiquity, considers the early development of Chinese civilisation and includes selections from Confucius´s Analects, the texts of Mencius and Laozi, as well as other key texts from the Confucian, Daoist, and Legalist schools. Part 2, The Making of a Classical Culture, focuses on Han China with readings from the Classic of Changes (I Jing), the Classic of Filiality, major Han syntheses, and the great historians of the Han dynasty. The development of Buddhism, from the earliest translations from Sanskrit to the central texts of the Chan school (which became Zen in Japan), is the subject of the third section of the book. Titled Later Daoism & Mahayana Buddhism in China, this part also covers the teachings of Wang Bi, Daoist religion, and texts of the major schools of Buddhist doctrine and practice. The final part, The Confucian Revival & Neo-Confucianism, details the revival of Confucian thought in the Tang, Song, and Ming periods, with historical documents that link philosophical thought to political, social, and educational developments in late imperial China. With annotations, a detailed chronology, glossary, and a new introduction by the editors, Sources of Chinese Tradition' will continue to be a standard resource, guidebook, and introduction to Chinese civilisation well into the twenty-first century. The Annals of Lü Buwei
KNOBLOCK John & RIEGEL Jeffrey

235 x 160mm. 878pp

This is the first complete English translation of Lüshi chunqiu, compiled in 239 B.C. An exceptionally This is the first complete English translation of Lüshi chunqiu, compiled in 239 B.C. under the patronage of Lü Buwei, prime minister to the ruler of the state of Qin, who was to become the first emperor of a newly unified China fifteen years later. Lü retained a group of scholars whose aim was to encompass the world?s knowledge in one great encyclopedia; so delighted was Lü with the finished work that he is said to have offered a fabulous prize of gold to anyone who could add or subtract even a single word. An exceptionally rich and comprehensive compendium, The Annals of Lü Buwei recounts in engaging, straightforward, and readable prose the great variety of beliefs and customs of its time. The work is one of the great monuments of Chinese thinking, a work of originality and cohesion, inspired by a vision of a universal empire ruled by principles that ensured harmony between man and nature, protective of human and animal life, devoted to learning and culture, practicing benevolence and kindness, and motivated by reason and morality. In addition to revealing an advanced state of technical knowledge, The Annals set forth a philosophy of government suitable to the centralised control that the Qin state would subsequently establish. It also took into account every philosophical trend of the day, sometimes adapting themes, sometimes combining ideas that had not previously been associated, sometimes rejecting and refuting positions that were in conflict with its basic vision. Because Lü aimed at comprehensiveness, his work preserved a number of systems of thought that are otherwise unknown or scarcely known. The Annals thus provides an essential tool for anyone seeking to reconstruct the philosophical controversies of the third century B.C. At the same time, Lü?s compendium proclaims his independent, highly original philosophical positions. Today, with most of the works of classical Chinese philosophy long lost, The Annals of Lü Buwei remains indispensable as a summa of the Chinese intellectual world of its time. The Late Tang: Chinese Poetry of the Mid-Ninth Century (827-860)
OWEN Stephen

596pp

The poetry of the Late Tang often looked backward, and many poets of the period distinguished themselves through the intensity of their retrospective gaze. Chinese poets had always looked backward to some degree, but for many Late Tang poets the echoes and the traces of the past had a singular aura.

In this work, Stephen Owen resumes telling the literary history of the Tang that he began in his works on the Early and High Tang. Focusing in particular on Du Mu, Li Shangyin, and Wen Tingyun, he analyzes the redirection of poetry that followed the deaths of the major poets of the High and Mid-Tang and the rejection of their poetic styles. The Late Tang, Owen argues, forces us to change our very notion of the history of poetry. Poets had always drawn on past poetry, but in the Late Tang, the poetic past was beginning to assume the form it would have for the next millennium; it was becoming a repertoire of available choices--styles, genres, the voices of past poets. It was this repertoire that would endure. (For this item please quote stock ID 31298) ISBN: 9780674033283

Courtesans & Opium: Romantic Illusions of the Fool of Yangzhou
HANAN Patrick (editor)

344pp

In his preface, the anonymous author of Fengyue Meng, translated as Romantic Illusions, describes his book as an act of penance for thirty years spent patronizing the brothels of Yangzhou. Written in the 1840s, Romantic Illusions is a cautionary tale exposing the seedy side of city life. It is Chinese literature's first true city novel, built on the author's biting observations and filled with freshly observed characters. As the author looks back on his career of debauchery, he portrays the Chinese brothel as a place of enthralling pursuit and romantic illusion. While marriages were arranged and often loveless, brothels offered passion and pleasure with accomplished courtesans ready to serve as both entertaining companions and sensual lovers. Following five sworn brothers and their respective relationships with Yangzhou courtesans, the anonymous Fool of Yangzhou depicts the lurid materialism of this dangerous world & its violence and corruption as well as its seductive but illusory promise. Never before translated into English, Courtesans and Opium is a brilliant portrait of decadence in nineteenth-century China. (For this item please quote stock ID 31061) ISBN: 9780231148221

For the first time ever in English, here is the complete text, with an introduction and extensive notes by renowned translator, Red Pine. Over one hundred poets are represented in this bilingual edition, including many of China's celebrated poets: Li Pai, Wang Wei, Tu Fu, Wang Po, and Ou-yang Hsiu.

Poems of the Masters was compiled during the Sung dynasty (9601278), a time when poetry became the defining measure of human relationships and understanding.

As Red Pine writes in his introduction: "Nothing was significant without a poem, no social or ritual occasion, no political or personal event was considered complete without a few well-chosen words that summarized the complexities of the Chinese vision of reality and linked that vision with the beat of their hearts . . . [Poetry's] greatest flowering was in the T'ang and Sung, when suddenly it was everywhere: in the palace, in the street, in every household, every inn, every monastery, in every village square."

The book is an original and ambitious attempt to criticise the prevalent assumptions about Chan Buddhist implications in Wang's nature poetry. While research on similar topics investigate how Wang might have intentionally imparted Chan significance to his poetry, this book argues there lacks evidence for such an assumption. The Fountainhead Of Chinese Erotica: The Lord of Perfect Satisfaction (Ruyijun zhuan), with a Translation & Critical Edition
STONE Charles R.

230 x 155mm 368pp

'With its crisp translation and copiously documented discussion, The Fountainhead of Chinese Erotica will appeal to specialists and general readers alike' - Paul Rakita Goldin, University of Pennsylvania. The Lord of Perfect Satisfaction (Ruyijun zhuan), a short work of fiction from the early 16th century, tells the story of the Tang dynasty's notorious Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule as emperor of China. It is famous not for the history it relates, but for its graphic sexual descriptions - the first ever in a Chinese novel - purportedly given from a woman's point of view. Despite its renown and unmistakable influence on later writing, the origins and significance of the Ruyijun zhuan have never been explored, in any language, and until now it has never been translated. Its date of composition is unknown, its author unidentified. One of its earliest appraisals, written by a contemporary scholar known for his conservatism, maintains that the Ruyijun zhuan is a moral work notwithstanding its sexual content. Combining a complete translation with a detailed and far-ranging study of the text, The Fountainhead of Chinese Erotica places this important cultural document into historical context and offers possibilities on its meaning. Classical Chinese Poetry: An Anthology
HINTON David

512pp

With this groundbreaking collection, translated and edited by the renowned poet and translator David Hinton, a new generation will be introduced to the work that riveted Ezra Pound and transformed modern poetry. The Chinese poetic tradition is the largest and longest continuous tradition in world literature, and this rich and far-reaching anthology of nearly five hundred poems provides a comprehensive account of its first three millennia (1500 BCE to 1200 CE), the period during which virtually all its landmark developments took place. Unlike earlier anthologies of Chinese poetry, Hinton's book focuses on a relatively small number of poets, providing selections that are large enough to re-create each as a fully realized and unique voice. New introductions to each poet's work provide a readable history, told for the first time as a series of poetic innovations forged by a series of master poeets. From the classic texts of Chinese philosophy to intensely personal lyrics, from love poems to startling and strange perspectives on nature, Hinton has collected an entire world of beauty and insight. And in his eye-opening translations, these ancient poems feel remarkably fresh and contemporary, presenting a literature both radically new and entirely resonant.

Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown: Poems by Zen Monks of China
EGAN Charles

448pp

Compiled by a leading scholar of Chinese poetry, this anthology provides interpretive strategies that best capture the ideological and literary nuances of Chan (Zen) poetry. Charles Egan outlines basic Mahayana Buddhist tenets, Chan development, and principles of Chinese poetry, enabling a rich encounter with works that were composed, paradoxically, to "say more by saying less."
The anthology features monk-poets from the eighth to seventeenth centuries whose writing ranges from direct vernacular to evocative, imagistic styles. Egan's faithful and elegant translations of poems by Han Shan, Guanxiu, and Qiji, among many other monks, will delight all readers, and Egan's detailed notes and analyses, which illuminate the specialized language of metaphor and allusion developed over hundreds of years of Chan discourse, will prove invaluable to scholars. Monk-poets joined mainstream ideas on poetic function to religious reflection and proselytizing, inventing a distinct genre that influenced generations of Chinese poets, critics, and writers. The simplicity of Chan poetry belies its complex ideology and sophisticated language, elements Egan vividly explicates through religious and literary critique. Exquisite paintings by Charles Chu further enhance the aesthetic and intellectual experience of these works, creating a truly sensational experience for readers of every background. Three Kingdoms: A Historical Novel (Abridged Edition)
LUO Guanzhong

225 x 140mm, 1 map. 489pp

Three Kingdoms tells the story of the fateful last reign of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) when the Chinese empire was divided into three warring kingdoms. Writing some twelve hundred years later, the Ming author Luo Guanzhong drew on histories, dramas, and poems portraying the crisis to fashion a sophisticated, compelling narrative that has become the Chinese national epic. This abridged edition captures the novel's intimate and unsparing view of how power is wielded, how diplomacy is conducted, and how wars are planned and fought. As important for Chinese culture as the Homeric epics have been for the West, this Ming dynasty masterpiece continues to be widely influential in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, and remains a great work of world literature.

The author of My Country and My People, The Importance of Living, and The Wisdom of China and India, Lin Yutang's works were praised by The New York Times as "wise, humorous and altogether charming." One of the most significant Chinese writers of the twentieth century, it was his bilingual essays in Chinese and English that established his reputation amongst his respective readerships. However, what remains largely ignored is the fact that in these bilingual pairs of essays Lin did not simply present the same text in two languages, but rather tailored the tone, writing style and even content of each version for its intended audiences. A variety of these witty and insightful essay pairs have been selected for this volume, presenting some of Lin Yutang's finest works to a new generation of readers.

Falling in Love: Stories from Ming China
HANAN Patrick (translator)

215 x 140mm 280pp

Falling in love, with all its accompanying problems, was a subject of obsessive interest among writers and readers in the Ming dynasty, when society held strictly to arranged marriages. The stories in this engaging collection all deal with this theme in very different ways, sometimes comically, sometimes tragically. They portray young people choosing their own lovers, resorting to ingenious stratagems and risky escapades in defiance of contemporary mores. Chosen to represent the best works from the great age of the vernacular story, they offer an admirable introduction to the world of Chinese fiction in this era. All of the stories in Falling in Love have been translated especially for this volume, and most appear here in translation for the first time. They are taken from two works, Constant Words to Awaken the World (Xing shi heng yan) and a related collection, The Rocks Nod Their Heads (Shi dian tou), both published in the early 17th century. Patrick Hanan is Victor S. Thomas Professor of Chinese Literature, Emeritus, at Harvard University. He is the author of The Chinese Vernacular Story, a history of the genre, and the translator of many works of Chinese traditional fiction, including The Carnal Prayer Mat and The Sea of Regret. Three Kingdoms: A Historical Novel - Complete & Unabridged, Part One
LUO Guanzhou

250 x 175mm 552pp

'The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide. Thus it has ever been'. Echoing the rhythms of Chinese history itself, the monumental tale Three Kingdoms begins. Three Kingdoms tells the story of the fateful last reign of the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), when the Chinese empire was divided into three warring kingdoms. This decisive period in Chinese history became a subject of intense and continuing interest to historians, poets, and dramatists. Writing some 1,200 later, the Ming author Luo Guanzhong drew on this rich literary heritage to fashion a sophisticated, compelling narrative that has become the Chinese national epic. Luo's novel offers a startling and unsparing view of how power is wielded, how diplomacy is conducted, and how wars are planned and fought; it has influenced the ways the Chinese think about power, diplomacy, and war even to this day. As important for Chinese culture as the Homeric epics have been for the West, this Ming dynasty masterpiece continues to be widely influential in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and remains a great work of world literature. 'A martial epic with an astonishing fidelity to history, which has been translated now into lively English by Moss Roberts . . . The subject matter of Three Kingdoms has long held an extraordinary grip on the Chinese imagination. . . . The great achievement of the author . . . was to match historiography with fiction and gain a synergistic effect from the combination of elite and popular tradition' - Patrick Hanan, New York Times Book Review 'By the measure of sheer density of history and drama, all other historical novels suffer by comparison to Three Kingdoms, the great epic of the Chinese literary tradition. Roberts' rendition of the prose is lively and readable, but his translation of the poetry is a delight, capturing the flavour and pace, and sometimes even the rhyme, of the original' - National Post, Canada 'The Three Kingdoms gives us The Iliad of China. First of the five great works of traditional prose fiction, this master narrative transforms history into epic and has thereby educated and entertained readers of five centuries with unforgettable exemplars of martial and civic virtue, of personal fidelity and political treachery. Moss Roberts's translation, the first complete rendering in English, is one of surpassing excellence and impeccable scholarship. It should delight and captivate Western readers for many more years to come' - Anthony Yu, University of Chicago 'Moss Roberts's elegant and powerful translation of China's most important historical romance has a stunning directness that aptly conveys the dramatic boldness of the original episodic narrative. English readers may now finally understand why this 15th-century novel so strategically shaped the political world-view of generations of Chinese' - Frederic Wakeman, Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley (For this item please quote stock ID 10318) ISBN: 9780520224780

Wen Wen Er Ya 温文尔雅(温总理引述诗文解析)
WANG Longlin et al

335 pp

(For this item please quote stock ID 33542) ISBN: 9787802208865

(For this item please quote stock ID 33506) ISBN: 9787101065602

*A Silver Treasury of Chinese Lyrics
CHEANG Alice W. (editor)

235 x 155mm. 342pp

The song lyric (ci), which began as a form of minor divertissement in the urban pleasure quarters of eighth and ninth century China, evolved into a major, and then dominant, poetic form over the four centuries that followed. Though most of the original tunes are now lost, the lyric remains unrivalled among Chinese literary genres for musicality and sheer evocative power. It was also, until modern times, the preferred vehicle for the expression of romantic love. The 130 poems in this collection are chosen to represent the genre's major stylistic developments and the varied talents of its best poets. These poems have been translated by some of the most respected scholars and translators in Chinese literary studies. Liu Yi & the Dragon Princess: A Thirteenth-Century Zaju Play by Shang Zhongxian
HAWKES David (translator & adaptor)

230 x 155mm. 80pp

Liu Yi & the Dragon Princess is an adaptation, made with a view to a sung, staged production, of the 13th-century zaju play Liu Yi Chuan Shu, which was itself based on an eighth-century fairy tale about a failed examination candidate's encounter with a shepherdess in distress who turns out to be the youngest daughter of the Dragon King of Lake Dongting. The young man's help is rewarded with riches, immortality and marriage to the beautiful princess. It is a wish-fulfillment fantasy written with charm and a certain ironical edge. This adaptation consists of the freely-translated lyrics of the zaju with a new, original dialogue, including an on-stage narrator. There is a long introduction with synopses of the Chinese text of the zaju and the original story it was based on. There is also an appendix explaining the use of 'padding words' in zaju. David Hawkes was born in 1923. He studied Classics (Latin and Greek) for a year (1942) during the War and Classical Chinese for two and a half years (1945-1948) after the War at Oxford University, followed by three years as a research student at the National University in Beiping/Beijing (1948-1951). He was professor of Chinese in Oxford University from 1960 to 1971 and a Fellow of All Souls College from 1973 to 1983, after which he abandoned Chinese Studies and lived in rural retirement in Wales. Publications: a translation of the Chuci (The Songs of the South, Oxford, 1959; greatly revised edition, Penguin, 1985); a translation of Hongloumeng (The Story of the Stone, volumes 1-3, Penguin, 1973-1980); and A Little Primer of Tu Fu (Oxford, 1967; reprinted Hong Kong, 1987). In 1989 The Chinese University Press published a volume of his essays on Chinese literature, entitled Classical, Modern & Humane. In 2000 the Centre for Literature and Translation of Lingnan University, Hong Kong, published a facsimile edition of notebooks he kept during the period of the Stone translation. A Silver Treasury of Chinese Lyrics
CHEANG Alice W. (editor)

210 x 140mm 196pp

Now English readers may share in the pleasure that the lyric has afforded its Chinese aficionados for over a thousand years. This paperback edition is in English, with a Chinese lyrics appendix. An impressive hardback edition, in face-to-face bilingual format, is also available in the Renditions Books series. Alice W. Cheang, the editor, read English at Yale College and earned her Ph.D. degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. WU Cheng'en

3rd printing 2001. 2360pp

Journey to the West is a mythological novel based on many centuries of popular tradition. It was probably shaped into its present form in the 1570s by Wu Cheng'en (1500-1582). This lively fantasy relates the amazing adventures of the priest Xuanzang as he travels west in search of the Buddhist sutras with his three disciples: the irreverent and capable Monkey, the greedy Pig, and the Friar Sand. The main story, the journey, takes the priest through all kinds of entertaining trials and tribulations, mainly at the hands of monsters and spirits who want to eat him. Only the courage and powers of his disciples, especially Monkey, save him from death. Monkey is the hero of this fantasy, and the reader will soon learn why he has been so loved in China. Will the pilgrims reach the Vulture Peak and obtain the scriptures? The answer will only be found at the end of the 100-chapter novel. The 36 pages of illustrations are from a 19th century Chinese edition. (For this item please quote stock ID 14026) ISBN: 9787119016634

The Golden Lotus/金瓶梅 (Full Version) (Chinese Edition) (2 Volume set)
ANONYMOUS

2 Volume set In simplified Chinese characters 1009pp

Jin Ping Mei or The Plum in the Golden Vase (pinyin: Jīn Píng Méi) (also The Golden Lotus) is a Chinese naturalistic novel composed in the vernacular (baihua) during the late Ming Dynasty. The author was Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng, a clear pseudonym. Earliest versions of the novel exist only in handwritten scripts; the first block-printed book was released only in 1610. The more complete version today comprises one hundred chapters.

Jin Ping Mei is sometimes considered to be the fifth classical novel after the Four Great Classical Novels. It is the first full-length Chinese fictional work to depict sexuality in a graphically explicit manner, and as such has a notoriety in China akin to Fanny Hill or Lady Chatterley's Lover in English.

Jin Ping Mei takes its name from the three central female characters Pan Jin-lian (whose name means "Golden Lotus"); Li Ping-Er (literally, "Little Vase"), a concubine of Ximen Qing; and Pang Chun-mei ("Spring plum blossoms"), a young maid who rose to power within the family.

Encounters with Cold Mountain: Poems by Han Shan
HAN Shan

205 x 130mm. 152pp

Han Shan was one of the leading poets of the Tang Dynasty, and perhaps the most ‘modern’ in the remarkably diversity of his subject matter and the breadth of his emotional responses to the world. He retired to Cold Mountain, took its name for his own and lived the life of a hermit. He left some 300 poems which, as legend has it, friends and visitors copied from the rocks and tree trunks on which he carved them. In short, though he adopted the life of a hermit, Han Shan seems to have lived, however, vicariously, a complete life, a diverse emotional and intellectual life during which the quest for his internal Buddha-nature was never quite capable of quelling the desire for a full and rich life in the world. Journey to the West
WU Cheng'en

256 pp

China's most popular traditional novel, Journey to the West is the thrilling story of the Monkey King and his epic quest, with his trusted companions, to redeem himself. They face fantastic foes, demons and monsters during their amazing adventures traveling to the Western paradise.

No matter what obstacle was put before him, the clever, wily Monkey King always got what he wanted—unimaginable strength, eternal life, even his own position in the Celestial Realm with the gods. More than anything else, though, the Monkey King loved mischief and rule–breaking, and was sure he was the most powerful creature in the world.

But after defeat and punishment for his tricks, the Monkey King found himself wanting some things he never expected: to be disciplined and good enough to help the monk Hsuan Zhang on his mission to bring Buddhist Scriptures—and enlightenment—to China.

Readers of all ages will thrill to Timothy Richard's retelling of the Monkey King's exploits—whether in the Dragon King's underwater castle, the Halls of the Dead or the palace of Buddha himself—and find themselves captivated as the Monkey King joins Hsuan Zhang and their companions the Dragon Horse, the Monk Sand and the equally mischievous Pig on the dangerous trek West. Despite the tale's ancient origins, Journey to the West proves as fresh and engaging an adventure as anything written today.
