| The Ordos Plateau of China: An Endangered Environment
HONG Jiang 235 x 155mm. 212pp The Ordos Plateau of China is an account of regional human-environmental history of the Ordos Plateau, a dryland region inhabited by Chinese farmers and Mongolian shepherds. It surveys environmental change (i.e. changes in vegetation and soil) during 1949-92, examines such societal factors as government policy, resource use institutions, economics (economy), population, and cultural attitudes and beliefs, and investigates how these factors have contributed to environmental change in the Ordos Plateau. Throughout the discussion, the author remains a keen awareness of the intricate interrelations among the environmental and societal factors. Following the theoretical framework of human dimensions of regional environmental change, this book seeks to contribute to the understanding of human-environment relationships in the Chinese socio-political and historical contexts. The Ordos Plateau of China is among a few books written on China?s regional human-environmental issues by a Chinese- and US-trained geographer in recent years. It reflects a combination of the Chinese strength in regional environmental studies and the western tradition of nature-society geography. Based primarily on first-hand materials, and other documents that are not readily accessible in English, this book provides a richly contextualized account of Ordos environmental history and its relationship with the society to the English-speaking world. It also helps the reader to better understand human-environmental issues in China in general. Hong Jiang is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Since 1988, she has been engaged in human-environmental studies in China?s dryland, and has published a number of articles. (For this item please quote stock ID 19822) ISBN: 9789280810356 |

| Shifting Ground: The Changing Agricultural Soils of China & Indonesia
LINDERT Peter 235 x 160mm. 352pp In this book Peter Lindert evaluates environmental concerns about soil degradation in two very large countries - China and Indonesia - where anecdotal evidence has suggested serious problems. Lindert does what no scholar before him has done: using new archival data sets, he measures changes in soil productivity over long enough periods of time to reveal the influence of human activity. China and Indonesia are good test cases because of their geography and history. China has been at the centre of global concerns about desertification and water erosion, which it may have accelerated with intense agriculture. Most of Indonesia's lands were created by volcanoes and erosion, and its rapid deforestation and shifting slash-burn agriculture have been singled out for international censure. Lindert's investigation suggests that human mismanagement is not on average worsening the soil quality in China and Indonesia. Human cultivation lowers soil nitrogen and organic matter, but has offsetting positive effects. Economic development and rising incomes may even lead to better soil. Beyond the importance of Lindert's immediate findings, this book opens a new area of study - quantitative soil history - and raises the standard for debating soil trends. Peter Lindert is Professor of Economics and Director of the Agricultural History Center at the University of California, Davis. (For this item please quote stock ID 22352) ISBN: 9780262122276 |

| The Retreat Of The Elephants
ELVIN Mark 235 x 155mm 592pp This is the first environmental history of China during the 3,000 years for which there are written records. It is also a treasure trove of literary, political, aesthetic, scientific, and religious sources, which allow the reader direct access to the views and feelings of the Chinese people toward their environment and their landscape. Elvin chronicles the spread of the Chinese style of farming that eliminated the habitat of the elephant population; the destruction of most of the forests; the impact of war on the environmental transformation of the landscape; and the re-engineering of the countryside through water-control systems, some of gigantic size. He documents the histories of three contrasting localities within China to show how ecological dynamics defined the lives of the inhabitants. And he shows that China in the 18th century, on the eve of the modern era, was probably more environmentally degraded than northwestern Europe around this time. Indispensable for its new perspective on long-term Chinese history and its explanation of the roots of China?s present-day environmental crisis, this book opens a door into the Chinese past. 'A classic. . . a work of quite staggering scholarship of a kind that very few historians have achieved in the post-second world war period' - Richard Grove, Centre for World Environmental History, University of Sussex. 'Although Chinese culture is different from ours, Elvin believes that those differences - which he so brilliantly lays out for us - do not, in themselves, explain what happened to China?s environment' - Jonathan Mirsky, Literary Review. 'Masterly and engaging...Essential for those who want to understand the long sweep of Chinese history, and it will enhance the perspective of those who think they already understand it. A scholarly tour de force' - J. R. McNeill, Wilson Quarterly. (For this item please quote stock ID 23980) ISBN: 9780300101119 |

| The River Runs Black: The Environmental Challenge to China's Future
ECONOMY Elizabeth C. 230 x 155mm 368pp China?s spectacular economic growth over the past two decades has dramatically depleted the country?s natural resources and produced skyrocketing rates of pollution. Environmental degradation in China has also contributed to significant public health problems, mass migration, economic loss, and social unrest. In The River Runs Black, Elizabeth Economy examines China?s growing environmental crisis and its implications for the country?s future development. Drawing on historical research, case studies, and interviews with officials, scholars, and activists in China, Economy traces the economic and political roots of China?s environmental challenge and the evolution of the leadership's response. She argues that China?s current approach to environmental protection mirrors the one embraced for economic development: devolving authority to local officials, opening the door to private actors, and inviting participation from the international community, while retaining only weak central control. The result has been a patchwork of environmental protection in which a few wealthy regions with strong leaders and international ties improve their local environments, while most of the country continues to deteriorate, sometimes suffering irrevocable damage. Economy compares China?s response with the experience of other societies and sketches out several possible futures for the country. Elizabeth Economyis C. V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director, Asia Studies, at the Council on Foreign Relations. She consults regularly for the U.S. government on issues related to China and the environment and is a frequent television and radio commentator on U.S.-China relations. Panoramic China: Environmental Protection: Harmony and Co-Existence
HU Baomin & LI Zhengguo (Editors); ASTER Howard & McGLINCHEY Tony (Consultants) 235 x 170mm 176pp At the present time, China has reached a major milestone in its economic development, accompanied by significant social progress.
