BRIDGES Lillian

For many centuries, face reading has provided an insightful aspect of traditional Chinese medicine. Based on an understanding of the shapes, markings and features of a face, a therapist can learn more about the health and life of a patient, relating to the principles of Chinese medicine. In addition to understanding how the body's internal functions - physical, psychological and emotional - can be seen on a face, readers will also learn to evaluate non-verbal expressions and assess personality from the features and markings. Technical and detailed information is presented in an upbeat, insightful and highly readable manner. This is the first book to focus on the deeper aspects of the face reading and diagnosis, and as such to make therapists and patients more conscious of their actions, reactions and the consequences of their behaviour relating to health. Features: >A fascinating & unusual subject tackled in a highly readable & detailed way - giving all levels of reader the chance to take something personally useful away from the book >A useful adjunct to the diagnostic tools in traditional Chinese medicine - giving the practitioner an additional 'tool' to make an ever more accurate diagnosis of their patient >Written by a lecturer & writer already known in this field - giving a uniquely authoritative & experienced voice to a subject which has been covered only a little in other texts >Heavily illustrated - to make sure that the reader is clear in understanding what the text describes. Contents: Introduction >Chinese Face Reading & Diagnosis >Ancient Wisdom - Modern Applications This is an overview of the origins of Chinese Face Reading and Diagnosis. It also includes the author's background in the field and how this ancient wisdom can be applied to life today. Section I: The Changing Face This section talks about aging and how the face changes over time. Genetic versus environmental factors are reviewed. Also discussed is how the expression of emotions marks the face and changes the shape of the features. Chapter 1: The Face Map - Mountains & Rivers/Critical Transitions This chapter discusses the facial map and how it is marked. Starting with the topographical map, mountainous and river features are evaluated for strength. Then, the life map is studied with traumatic and stressful incidents marking the face in specific places corresponding with ages. These memories set issues and patterns. Recognizing the patterns is one of the first steps toward recovering lost jing. Stepping out of pattern and reprogramming enables people to regain health and create a self directed future. Chapter 2. The Facial Mosaic - Yin/Yang, Three Zones, Facial Geometry These divisions of the face show how the parts give valuable clues about the internal vs. external expression of deep emotions, the decision making process. The framework for the face reveals generalized career predispositions and society's projection of personality based on face shape. Chapter 3. Five Element Features & Markings The various features of the face discussed in great variety and detail based on the five element system of Chinese philosophy. An explanation of the five elements - water, wood, fire, earth and metal is given. Each corresponding group of features is evaluated for strength, size, shape and characteristics. Section II: The Universal Language of the Face This section talks about the power of non-verbal communication and its use throughout the world. Emotions and their expressions are universal. The basic facial expressions are analysed within the framework of the facial muscles. Chapter 4: Reading Shen - Emotions, Expressions & Shen Disturbances The five basic emotions of Chinese medicine are explained - fear, anger, excitement, sympathy, and grief. The effect of these emotions on a person's body and the reaction of the other people are discussed. Also included in this chapter is an overview of various shen disturbances - signs of mental illness, confused thinking or misfiring of the brain that causes speech and memory problems. Chapter 5: Light in the Eyes - Peach Luck/Fire & Focus A special quality of light in the eye is known as Peach Luck - charisma, charm and sex appeal. Some people have lots - others have little. How peach luck is developed, the various types of peach luck and how to increase peach luck are all topics in this chapter along with methods to help the reader learn to focus the light for success. Many examples of famous people included. Section III Facial Diagnosis & Healing This section talks about the use of face as a diagnostic tool in Oriental Medicine. It explains what kind of thing that can be seen on the face for medical purposes. Chapter 6: Your Biological Blueprint - Signs of Organ Health & Ch'i This chapter outlines the connections between the parts of the face to the different organs of the body. Special attention is paid to coloration and markings that indicate strength of an organ or distress and potential disease. Chapter 7: The Psychological & Emotional Underlay of Disease Diseases really are 'in our head'. This chapter delves into the theory that disease states are influenced by stuck emotions and patterns of inappropriate emotional and physical behaviour and reactivity. The possible issues underlying the major causes of death and chronic diseases are hypothesized and discussed. This information is backed up by many studies and interesting anecdotal evidence. Chapter 8: Inner Healing - Seeing the Soul on the Face Ways to achieve self healing by practicing the expression of the 'Transcendent' emotions - wisdom, human kindness, happiness - love, instinct and gratitude - that heal the body. How to rise above issues and patterns to see their higher purpose - each person's 'Will that Cant Be Willed' or 'Golden Path'. When this is discovered, a person's life falls into perfect alignment - resentment and blame are banished. This leads to a life of positive intent. This expression of the soul's intent and eventual fulfillment lead to true beauty. Many examples and stories are included. (For this item please quote stock ID 19660) ISBN: 9780443073151

Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine
CHEN Ping

255 x 210mm; index, bibliography, glossary, appendix 284pp

This work is an original text based on Dr. Chen's years of experience as a clinician and as a university professor teaching diagnosis courses in China. Trained in China as a medical doctor and as a doctor of Chinese medicine, she taught Chinese-speaking biomedical and traditional physicians as well as English-speaking interns. Upon her arrival in the US to teach students of Chinese medicine, she became concerned for her Western student's particular difficulty in applying pattern identification in practice. She concluded that the probable cause of this difficulty was in part because available English language texts lack the depth of Chinese teaching and in part because lecture-like presentations of diagnostic skills do not make it easy to grasp clear distinctions. In composing this work, Dr. Chen arranged a great deal of information so that the logical relationships became easy to see, easy to read, and easy to understand. She succinctly explains each of the symptoms, signs, techniques, and patterns with special emphasis on practical clinical observations, followed by a graphical display of the clinical details for each. Dr. Chen is not only one of the most experienced teachers and clinicians to write about diagnosis, she is also one of the most practically innovative. By graphically displaying the details and relationships, she saves students the hours and hours of effort usually taken to sort these details from lectures and textbooks. In the translational terminology used she has been equally creative. By preserving the basic English terms on which there is a higher degree of consistency and familiarity ? excess and deficiency for example ? readers feel most comfortable. By insuring that the full detail of the diagnostic skills is included, and that each concept can be reliably linked to Chinese, readers are assured that they can discover anything they might need to know. They will also be able to cross-reference other texts that have preserved a reliable relationship to their Chinese sources. The text itself is in two parts. The first part begins with a review of the main concepts and principles of diagnosis. Chapter 2, Inspection, describes a whole-person diagnostic routine with emphasis on tongue inspection. It also includes a section on paediatric inspection of the superficial veins of the index finger. Chapter 3 details the traditional approach to listening and smelling. Chapter 4 describes a full course of questioning including areas of investigation particular to pregnancy, post-partum issues, and paediatric disorders. Chapter 5 is devoted to palpation, with an emphasis on pulse palpation. The second part of the book is devoted to Pattern Identification. In Chapter 6, Eight Principle Pattern Identification is detailed. Here, the graphical approach really excels because it is easy to see how one pathomechanism, for example, an insufficiency of yang qi, can related to many manifestations observed by the patient and practitioner, as well as many systemic pathologies. There is also an analysis of transmission between one eight principle pattern and another. Chapter 7 describes pathogenic patterns and Chapter 8 describes patterns of Qi and Blood. Chapter 9 describes the identification of patterns for each of the internal organs. Here too the liberal use of tables makes the multiplicity of relationships easier to see. In Chapters 10 to 12, Dr. Chen describes three specialised diagnostic approaches: Six Channels; Wei, Qi, Ying and Blood; and the three burners. Chapter 13 presents fourteen case histories to be used as review of pattern diagnosis. There is also an extensive index. (For this item please quote stock ID 22208) ISBN: 9780967303451

Chinese Pulse Diagnosis: A Contemporary Approach
HAMMER Leon

111 tables & illustrations 812pp

Pulse diagnosis, one of the jewels of traditional Chinese medicine, is a profoundly subtle instrument for the early diagnosis and prevention of disease. Yet far too often, in the haste of modern education and practice, it has become a neglected art. Chinese Pulse Diagnosis offers a clear and practical path toward a much deeper understanding of this traditional diagnostic method, while recasting its interpretation in the context of our own times. The book is organised in seventeen chapters presented in an advancing hierarchy of complexity. The early chapters consider such general issues as terminology, classification of pulse qualities, historical comparisons of positions and depths, the effects of age and gender, and a methodology for taking the pulse. The middle chapters provide an in-depth look at each of the individual pulse qualities, identified by felt sensation based on such characteristics as rate and rhythm, stability, volume, depth, size, and shape. The types of pathology associated with each of the qualities are also discussed. Later chapters examine the significance of the qualities when found across the entire pulse, or large segments of the pulse (left or right side, across the burners), and at different depths. The relationship of the various pulse qualities to psychology and prognosis are addressed in separate chapters. A final summary chapter on interpretation, supported with case histories, draws everything together to show how this information can be formulated into a rational diagnosis. Key information in the book is organised and richly illustrated with over one hundred tables and graphic drawings. Individual chapter tables of contents and extensive indexes provide convenient access to every aspect of this important subject. (For this item please quote stock ID 7710) ISBN: 9780939616497

'This is an intellectual and anthropological study of pulse reading as practiced and conceived in traditions of China, India, Persia, Greece, and the West. It contains commonly accepted, basic information on these differing medical styles and their approach to pulse diagnosis, and as such provides a useful resource for students. It contains many alphabetical arrangements and tables that succinctly convey information relative to components, interrelationships, functions, and categories, and many comparison charts that allow the reader to appreciate the similarities and differences of differing medical persuasions. Flavored somewhat by its era (most of the sources appear to be European or English-language texts written prior to the 1960’s), it naturally contains shortcomings of secondary-source translation (demonstrating quite graphically how simple it is to commit misinformation to the immortality of ink and paper); yet, admirably, it gives the readers fascinating glimpses of how vigorously and variously humankind has attempted to describe and pattern illness' - Redwing Reviews. The most significant diagnostic technique available to the medical profession has always been the pulse. This unprecedented text presents a detailed examination of the possible interpretations of this simple indication of the presence of life, from the point of view of four major medical traditions. Useful comparisons of the different pulses are also included to aid the reader in understanding how to differentiate between the many types of pulses. There is a chapter that analyzes the pulse manifestations of various common diseases, as well as chapter that discusses sections of Wang Shu-He's "The Pulse Canon" ("Mai Jing"). Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis (2nd Edition)
KIRSCHBAUM Barbara

290 x 220 mm Student/Practitioner Price $104.55 300 pp

Tongue diagnosis is a vital instrument used in Chinese medicine both to assess the current health of a patient and to provide a basis for prognosis. It also informs the practitioner about the underlying strength or weakness of the patient’s constitution.

This new (2nd) edition of Atlas of Chinese Tongue Diagnosis contains over two hundred color photographs of tongues seen in a Western clinic. The photos provide a graphic representation of a wide variety of common disorders. Each photograph is accompanied by a description of the significant features of the tongue, the corresponding Chinese diagnosis for each feature, accompanying symptoms, Western diagnosis, and pertinent background information. The sequence of the photos within a chapter shows the increasing degree of imbalance among the body’s energies.

The presentation of the tongues is organized according to the nature of the underlying organ disharmony: Lungs, Spleen, Stomach, Kidney, Heart, Liver. Other chapters focus on particular aspects of the tongue such as pale tongues, cracked tongues, special coatings, as well as those associated with heat disorders and blood stasis. A final chapter surveys several cases that reflect how the tongue changed over the course of treatment, with before and after photographs. This systematic presentation provides the student and practitioner with a much deeper understanding of the methodology of tongue diagnosis in Chinese medicine.

This second edition of the Atlas combines and reconfigures the content of the two volumes in the original edition into one new, integrated volume. The new edition retains most of the photos from the first volume and a number of case histories from the second. A few new photos that are particularly good examples of specific tongue colors or other signs have also been added. At the same time, some of the photos and case histories in the original volumes have been discarded to enhance the readability of the book and thus make it more useful as a single volume reference work.

An extensive and detailed index provides access to virtually every aspect of the hundreds of tongues presented in this atlas, and their interrelationships.
