Yi Lin Gai Cuo: Correcting the Errors in the Forest of Medicine
WANG Qing-ren

228 x 153mm. 512pp

The Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Correcting the Errors in the Forest of Medicine) is one of the most reprinted books in all of Chinese medicine. Written by Wang Qing-ren in the Qing dynasty, this book is made up of two main parts. The first is Wang's discussion of anatomical errors in the classical literature and his suggested corrections based on his study of cadavers. While these discussions are interesting for their logic, they themselves are not correct. The second part is a discussion of the clinical use of the Zhu Yu Tang (Stasis-expelling Decoction) series of formulas created by Wang. These are some of the most effective and commonly used formulas in Chinese medicine. They include: >Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Mansion of the Blood Stasis-expelling Decoction) >Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang (Infra-diaphragmatic Stsis-expelling Decoction) >Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Lesser Abdominal Stasis-expelling Decoction) >Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang (Body Pain Stasis-expelling Decoction) >Tong Qiao Zhu Yu Tang (Orifice-freeing Stasis-expelling Decoction), etc. This is the book that elevated blood stasis to one of the most important disease mechanisms and patterns within Chinese medicine. Wang's original text is reproduced with translations, annotations, and commentaries by a team of two practitioners (one Chinese & one European) and a sinologist. In addition, this book also includes numerous published clinical trails and case histories on the use of Wang's 11 most important formulas. A must-read for anyone interested in blood stasis and its treatment. (For this item please quote stock ID 26977) ISBN: 9781891845390

Clinical Manual of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines: A Guide to Ethical & Pure Patent Medicines
MACLEAN Will with TAYLOR Kathryn

210 x 150 mm; 16 pages in colour. 758pp

Regulation of Chinese patent medicines in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration means that Australia is now at the forefront of quality control and is the benchmark by which other countries assess the best patents available.

Patent medicines have had a dubious reputation until now. Dogged by talk of contamination and endangered species, the Chinese medicine profession has been confronted with serious ethical issues. In addition, vagaries in labelling mean listed indications are often incorrect or in a confusing Chinglish hybrid, further muddying the waters.

Recent changes in government regulation and the testing of over 600 patents by the California Department of Health have significantly changed the industry. Significant change is also happening in China, where standards and industry regulation and technology are rapidly improving.

We now have, for the first time, a clear reference guide to the best patents available, and how to use them to maximum clinical advantage.

This new and substantially revised edition of The Clinical Manual of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines, written by experienced practitioners, represents a significant addition to the professional Chinese medicine literature. While specifically targeted at an Australian audience, listing all the 'over the counter' TGA listed medicines currently available, the text goes further and includes detailed descriptions of GMP quality, classical medicines available in the US and Europe. In total, just over 330 medicines are discussed, making this text a handy reference for standard formulations as well as quality controlled patent medicines.

The handy design, clear layout and practical, clinically oriented text of the The Clinical Manual of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines will serve both students and practitioners wanting to access this valuable and essential resource.

Included in this volume:
>A new user-friendly format with patents organised into common clinical categories, including gynaecology, digestive, skin, infection & inflammation, men's health and paediatrics
>Indications & new discussions on patent combining drawn from clinical experience
>330 medicines discussed from a clinical point of view, with colour pictures & real indications rather than the restrictive, often misleading indications listed on the packaging
>75 pages of indices make finding the correct medicine easy
>Graphic representations of the correct pattern indentifying features for each medicine
>Extensive glossary of Chinese medicine terminology
>Concise functions of all individual herbs
>Table of possible herb-drug interactions
>Only patent medicine free of contaminants & endangered animal species included

Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine
WANG Ju-Yi & ROBERTSON Jason

275 illustrations & tables. Student/Practitioner Price $85 718pp

Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between organ and channel theory can lead to more precise diagnoses and better clinical results. This book is a collaboration between Wang Ju-Yi, one of modern China’s most respected scholars, teachers, and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, and his American apprentice and practitioner, Jason Robertson. While most textbooks focus either on the functions of the organs in basic physiology or on the uses of the channels in treatment, this book shows the essential relationships between the two. Theory and practice are connected through a detailed discussion of a channel palpation methodology developed by Dr. Wang, which leads to more precise and effective point selection, location, and technique. Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine was developed during Mr. Robertson’s apprenticeship with Dr. Wang in Beijing, and is presented in a unique and highly readable format that preserves the intimacy of dialogue between apprentice and teacher, with questions and answers, narratives, and case studies. About the author Wang Ju-Yi is a member of the first graduating class of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (1962) and has practiced Chinese medicine for over 45 years. After three decades of seeing patients at the Xuan Wu Hospital of Chinese Medicine in Beijing, Dr. Wang retired to edit the prestigious journal Chinese Acupuncture. He has also been a pioneer in developing a private Chinese medical practice in the quickly changing environment of modern Beijing. Jason D. Robertson is a graduate of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (San Francisco). He has lived and worked in China and Taiwan for over eight years. He studied Chinese language at Washington and Lee University, and then completed a post-graduate language program at Taiwan Normal University. Mr. Robertson currently maintains a private practice in Seattle, and is on the faculty of the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine. (For this item please quote stock ID 28662) ISBN: 9780939616626

'The new 3rd edition of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica raises the bar on the practice of herbal medicine in the West. Its commentaries on individual herbs and their combinations provide a wealth of practical information previously unavailable in English. The book is not just informative, it's fun to read'Charles Chace.

'The 3rd edition sets a new standard of excellence for Chinese herbals. The level of scholarship in this book is a reminder of what is possible through a combination of intellect, integrity, and hard work. A 'must' for the clinic and the classroom'Craig Mitchell.

The new third edition of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica is designed to give practitioners the information they need to practice Chinese herbal medicine with greater understanding and confidence. It provides a wealth of new information — more than twice the content of the previous edition — and practical insight into more than 530 of the most commonly used herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia.

Drawing from a wide range of sources, both classical and modern, this edition provides an unparalleled perspective and expansive detail that goes far beyond what is available elsewhere to the Western practitioner.

Among its many features:

>Herbs are grouped in chapters by function, with expanded summaries and tables for contrast and comparison. Each herb is identified by its pharmaceutical, pinyin, botanical, and family names, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English common names.

>Key characteristics are provided at the beginning of each entry, along with dosage, properties, channels entered, and relevant cautions and contraindications. This provides a quick overview of essential information.

>Actions and indications are integrated with important combinations that illustrate the range of an herb’s functions, with references to appropriate formulas. This presents a more three-dimensional picture of how each herb is actually used.

>Expanded commentary offers in-depth analysis and places each herb in its clinical context through rich historical references. The mechanisms of action underlying important combinations, and comparisons with similar herbs, provide a broader context for understanding how the herb can be used with optimal effect.

>A section devoted to nomenclature and preparation describes the most important methods of processing and preparing each herb, and the advantages of each method. It also provides information about other commonly-used names and historical background.

>Safety is an important focus of this edition, with an emphasis on proper herb identification. Issues concerning standardized products, desirable qualities, variants, and adulterants are explained for each herb. There is also extensive information on toxicity, as well as chemical constituents.

>The utility of this book is enhanced by its wide range of appendices, including colour photographs comparing the standard and adulterant forms of over 20 common herbs; tables of herbs that are indicated for specific pathologies of the five yin organs; and extensive cross references of the herbs by taxonomy, pinyin, pharmaceutical name, and other East Asian languages. There are also comprehensive indices of both herbs and formulas, as well as a general index.

JIAO Shu-De

255 x 175mm. Student/Practitioner Price $83.26 312pp

Case study literature is widely regarded as one of the most useful tools for education and clinical development in Chinese medicine. However, few English case studies truly illustrate the successes and failures of highly-skilled practitioners, and thus many such books fail to be truly useful in the clinic. By contrast, this text by Jiao Shu-De represents a breakthrough in high-quality case study literature. Dr. Jiao is one of the most well-respected and well-known Chinese medical practitioners of the modern era. His extensive knowledge and profound clinical experience has been an inspiration to generations of modern Chinese students, and his collected works provide tremendous insight into medicinal therapy, formulas, and case-based treatment approaches. As the third and final publication in Dr. Jiao's series, this case study volume provides a fascinating insight into the clinical thought processes of one of the few true modern masters of our time. In this text, he documents a variety of cases that cover nearly every specialty field in Chinese medicine. Each case provides an in-depth patient history, and each patient is diagnosed and treated using the principle of pattern identification to determine treatment. Readers will see Dr. Jiao's analysis as he correlates symptoms, identifies patterns, determines the treatment method, selects and modifies formulas, integrates biomedicine, and tracks the patient's progress. While students will benefit from this case-based approach to education, experienced practitioners will gain new insights from the sophisticated approach that Dr. Jiao utilises. Already a classic in China, this long-awaited text fills a clinical niche that makes it an essential addition to the library of all serious practitioners (For this item please quote stock ID 26363) ISBN: 9780912111889

'Invaluable for those midwives and doctors who are presently studying acupuncture to enhance their practice, whilst at the same time it is essential reading for any acupuncturist who works in the field of pregnancy and childbirth or who comes into contact with childbearing women' - Sharon Yelland, Midwife and Acupuncturist, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth UK

'Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth is a book that is long over due for the acupuncture profession and is destined to become a standard text in acupuncture colleges around the world especially with the interest of practitioners in TCM gynaecology' - Heiko Lade, President New Zealand Registrar of Acupuncturists

'Within each chapter the author has integrated Western Medical diagnosis with a TCM framework, whilst using succinct, manageable language; something I find lacking from several other texts in this subject, and something I welcome within our clinical practice. I welcome texts that provide the clinician with enhancement of patient care and problem solving skills within an evidence base that is effective, relevant and pertinent to current health care. This book provides all these qualities and more' - Jennie Longbottom, Lecturer, Physiotherapy and Acupuncture, Coventry University (For this item please quote stock ID 25982) ISBN: 9780951054697

A Practical Guide to Acupoints Reprinted Edition
JARMEY Chris, BOURATINOS Ilaira

275 x 210mm.Student/Practitioner Price $48.410 With 240 full colour illustrations. 352pp

This book is an exceptionally well-illustrated guide to the location and properties of the major channels and acupoints. Whereas most good books on the subject give needle depth and other useful information for the acupuncturist, this book uniquely provides additional information for bodyworkers such as Shiatsu and Tuina therapists. For example, in keeping with normal practice, the location of a point is given as a precise anatomical location and illustrated with a dot, along with alternative locations where relevant. However, this book goes further by delineating the larger area where the point can be activated by pressure, gua sha and other means. In addition, the optimum position for treatment via acupuncture, acupressure and other treatment strategies is given, as treatment positions can vary according to the method of point stimulation. The distribution of sensation resulting from point stimulation is also documented, and differentiated between pressure and needle application where appropriate. This book is produced with the student and conscientious practitioner in mind, with a great deal of care and research into accuracy being achieved. Hence, we expect it to become a landmark text. The price has been kept to a minimum without compromising on any aspect of its quality and production, to ensure its accessibility to students. Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies (Second Edition)
SCHEID Volker, BENSKY Dan, BAROLET Randy & ELLIS Andrew (compilers & translators)

Completely Revised, New Edition , 285 x 220 mm Student/Practitioner Price $136.00
1019 pp

The new 2nd edition of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies-the companion volume to Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica-is designed to serve as both a textbook for students and an authoritative reference for practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.

Included in the new edition are over 800 medicinal formulas drawn from both classical and modern sources, which provide more than twice the information in the earlier edition. For each of the 340-plus principal formulas there is a discussion of its therapeutic actions and indications, analysis of the functions and interactions of the ingredients, method of preparation, and a list of modifications to customize the formula in the clinic. Over 460 variations and associated formulas offer additional options for the practitioner.

The commentary to each formula has been considerably expanded. This section deepens the reader's understanding of a formula's genealogy, presents an overview of controversies regarding composition, usage, and other issues, describes the extension of a formula's application to a wider range of disorders, and provides key clinical pointers to facilitate use of the formula in the modern clinic.

A new section on comparisons has been added to this edition. This is intended to help students and practitioners focus on the distinguishing characteristics of each formula by contrasting it with other formulas that are similar in terms of composition or indication. Tables at the end of each chapter reinforce these distinctions by comparing and contrasting formulas across a wider range.

The introduction to the book traces the historical evolution of the formulas, and provides practical pointers for their preparation and use. Detailed timelines depict the key events, authors, and texts in the 2,000-year history of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, placing the contents of this book in historical context.

Among the appendices are a pinyin-to-English cross reference to the formulas, a basic summary formulary correlated to symptoms and disorders, a full listing of all books cited in the text, and a bibliography of all modern sources used in the preparation of the book. A comprehensive index to the formulas, and a general index, round out the contents.
