Quality Control Methods for Medicinal Plant Materials
EDITORIAL

235 x 160mm 123pp

A collection of recommended test procedures for assessing the identity, purity, and content of medicinal plant materials. Intended to assist national laboratories engaged in drug quality control, the manual responds to the growing use of medicinal plants, the special quality problems they pose, and the corresponding need for international guidance on reliable methods for quality control. Recommended procedures - whether involving visual inspection or the use of thin-layer chromatography for the qualitative determination of impurities - should also prove useful to the pharmaceutical industry and pharmacists working with medicinal plant materials. Test procedures are intended to support the development of national standards based on local market conditions, with due regard to existing national legislation and national and regional norms. The book also includes advice on general limits for pesticides and other contaminants commonly found in medicinal plant materials. The book opens with a brief discussion of general principles for the analysis of plant materials, including advice on the special handling procedures required during sampling, and guidance on macroscopic and microscopic examination as the first step towards establishing the identity and degree of purity of plant materials. Subsequent chapters describe procedures for the determination of foreign matter, ash, extractable matter, water and volatile matter, volatile oils, bitterness value, haemolytic activity, tannins, swelling index, and foaming index. Where relevant, suitable test apparatuses are illustrated and explained. Additional chapters set out test methods for the determination of such important contaminants as pesticide residues, arsenic and heavy metals, and microorganisms, including aflatoxins. The remaining chapters cover procedures for preparing culture media, strains of microorganisms suitable for use in tests, specifications for adsorbents for use in thin-layer chromatography, and detailed descriptions of the reagents, test solutions, and volumeric solutions used in the recommended tests. The Warrior As Healer: A Martial Arts Herbal for Power, Fitness, & Focus
JOINER Thomas Richard

230 x 155mm 144pp

A comprehensive and easy-to-use guide to the herbal formulas traditionally used in martial arts for healing injuries, increasing vitality, and focusing meditation. >Over 100 authentic Chinese formulas >Complete instructions for preparing your own decoctions, medicinal wines, pills, & salves. This extended to the study of the healing arts and the use of herbs not only for injury management but also to increase sensitivity, improve energy levels, and, most significantly, raise consciousness. Many of the greatest figures in martial arts history were as renowned as healers as they were as warriors. This history has left behind an extensive healing tradition that includes an immense repository of herbal formulas. Thomas Joiner provides the recipes and formulas that have been used for centuries to stop bleeding, speed the healing of fractured bones, and increase vitality as well as those that increase one's ability to focus and calm the mind or spirit. The book includes an extensive list of mail-order suppliers for the rarer ingredients used in these formulas. (For this item please quote stock ID 8635) ISBN: 9780892817962

Medicinal Herbs in the Garden, Field & Marketplace
STURDIVANT Lee & BLAKLEY Tim

230 x 150mm 330pp

There has been very little published on the cultivation, harvesting and marketing of medicinal herbs. This title, proclaimed by the publishers as 'the first guide to medicinal herb growing and marketing' is one of those rare items on the subject. But it has its drawbacks: it is a guide for the United States and Canada, and it is limited to 75 medicinal herbs most of which are from standard European or North American plants. There is a smattering of Asian plants, including ginseng. This book has some applicability to the Australian and New Zealand situation, especially for herbalists considering diversification into ?growing their own?: the cultivation information is quite detailed. However, in terms of potential markets, the information provided here is of limited use, unless those diversified herbalists are looking for export markets in North America. Authentication of Chinese Medicinal Materials by DNA Technology
SHAW P.C., WANG J. & BUT P. (editors)

250pp

Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for centuries in the Orient to relieve or treat diseases. Its efficacy is now attracting worldwide attention. Chinese medicinal materials are traditionally identified by their organoleptic characteristics, such as the texture or the odour. To ensure consistency of quality and avoid misuse, reliable programs are urgently needed for authentication. Proper authentication also assists in the detection and conservation of endangered species. DNA molecules offer a more definitive means of authentication, as genetic composition is unique for each taxon and is less affected by age, physiological conditions and environmental factors. This book is the first of its kind to introduce and evaluate the molecular techniques that have been developed to authenticate Chinese medicinal materials. The contents of the book are divided into four parts. The first part reviews the current status of molecular authentication of Chinese medicinal materials. The second part describes equipment and materials required, and in the third, researchers in the field present the principles and step-by-step protocols for a wide spectrum of techniques used in the molecular authentication of TCM. The fourth part provides an overview of the field. (For this item please quote stock ID 16521) ISBN: 9789810246211

An Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica
WU Jing-Nuan

260 x 190mm, 320 4-colour plates. 706pp

One of the cornerstones of traditional Chinese medicine, herbal medicine has evolved over centuries of clinical practice and empirical results into a vast body of knowledge encompassing more than 6,000 substances, most of whose effects and uses have been documented and researched. The literature on Chinese medicinal herbs is unparalleled and unsurpassed in the world's medical knowledge; the earliest known pharmacological work was composed before the end of the third century BC. The first classical Chinese materia medica appeared during the late Han dynasty (AD 25-22) and included 365 entries of botanical, zoological, and mineral substances, listing their properties and effects. Subsequent materia medica were assembled during virtually every dynasty from the Liang (AD 456-536) to the Qing (AD 1645-1911). Among the major treatments published during these centuries was the 30-volume Materia Medica Arranged According to Pattern, which had 1558 entries, more than 3,000 formulae, and became the official pharmacopoeia of herbal medicine in China for 500 years. An Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica brings to the English language a lavishly illustrated atlas of the 320 herbs used most frequently in traditional Chinese medical practice. Each substance is profiled authoritatively in monographs that provide pharmaceutical, botanical and English names; flavour properties and channel tropisms; functions; clinical uses and major combinations; dosage and administration; and precautions. Intended for medicinal and pharmaceutical chemists as well as practitioners of homeopathic and alternative medicines, this materia medica offers a unique blend of authenticity that is derived from knowledge of classical Chinese literature with a clearly practical objective of persenting valuable information in a straightforward, easily comprehensible style. 'An Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica provides an accessible and useful definitive reference on Chinese herbal medicine. It gives an understanding of the theories and history of the subject along with superb illustrations accompanied by thorough write-ups on plants. I rate this as the best book on the subject and have long recognised the inspired work of Wu Jing-Nuan - Holly Shimizu, Executive Director of the United States Botanical Garden. Tibetan Medicinal Plants
KLETTER Christa & KRIECHBAUM Monica (editors)

275 x 195mm 383pp

>Provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types >Contains descriptions of the macroscopic & microscopic characteristics of the parts of the plants featured >Presents anatomical features of 76 plants >Treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and tries to explain its meaning Increasingly, modern medicine relies on so called traditional or ancient medical knowledge. Holistic practices such as adhering to proper diet, observing rules for appropriate behavior, and administering medical preparations are coupled with the latest technology and methods to treat the whole patient. In light of this trend, there is much to be gained from understanding of one of the oldest medical systems still in existence. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides a detailed analysis of how Tibetan plants are used in this centuries old system. The book opens with a summary of Tibetan medicine and covers the various habitats in which these plants are found. The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs listed by the Tibetan plant name. Each monograph consists of several chapters addressing different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph presents an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant and describes their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and explains its meaning, lessening confusion by reducing the number of translations. Traditional Tibetan medicine has been in existence for centuries. Curative practices existed in the prebuddistic era, and the art of healing developed more than 2500 years ago. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier to grasp the Tibetan concept. It gives you a comprehensive look at this centuries old science. Handbook of Biologically Active Phytochemicals & Their Activities
DUKE James

208pp

? Provides a unique catalog of biologically active compounds ? Lists toxic and/or lethal doses for many biological activities ? Helps to calculate effective dosage for related activities The Handbook of Biologically Active Phytochemicals & Their Activities presents an alphabetical catalogue of some 3,000 biologically active phytochemicals (elements and compounds) from higher plants. The data includes at least one and in some cases as many as 25 biological activities for each phytochemical. The book's tables also provide data on effective dose, inhibitory concentrations, and lethal and/or toxic doses. Entries after 1990 indicate the source of the data. Handbook of Biologically Active Phytochemicals & Their Activities makes it possible for the first time to locate the concentration of many compounds in plants and compare this data with dosage information to calculate how much of a given plant food it would take to cause lethality, antioxidant activity, hypoglycemic activity, or artemicidal activity. These handy tables of hard-to-find information make this book an indispensable resource for pharmacologists, toxicologists, nutritionists, pharmacognocists, and food scientists. Presented mostly in Chinese but an English description (sources, actions and indications) for each herb is also included. Each entry shows latin name and common English name (for example cortex dictamni [baixianpi] is also labelled densefruit pittany root-bark). For English readers, there is a problem: the herbs are classified by function but this is only obvious if you read Chinese. In addition, the set's herb index in volume four is arranged alphabetically by pinyin but it is also in Chinese. A beautifully presented set that includes great colour illustrations and packaged in a sturdy box (with padding). Great as a gift, or for the serious TCM practitioner or TCM scholar. Food Plants of China
HU Shiu-ying

260 x 184mm. 800pp

With its ancient cultural heritage, China naturally has a rich background in the utilitarian value of its many different vegetative environments. Today, for the conservation of health, Chinese people are still eating many species of plants. This book is an encyclopedic, two-part introduction to the edible plants of China. Part 1 introduces the cultural aspects of Chinese food plants and the spread of Chinese culinary culture to the world. It also describes how the botanical and cultural information was acquired; what plants have been selected by the Chinese people for food; how these foodstuffs are produced, preserved, and prepared; and what Western societies can learn from Chinese practices. Part 2 provides the botanical identification of the plant kingdom for the esculents used in China as food and/or as beverage. The plants are illustrated with line drawings or composite photographic plates. With a wealth of scientific information, detailed recipes, elegant line drawings and easy-to-access indices, Food Plants of China should be on the shelf of botanists, practitioners in nutritional fields, and general readers who love to eat healthily. 'Dr. Hu's encyclopedic contribution is destined to fill a void that has long been obvious and will remain for many years a vade-mecum, not only for botanists but for scientists in related nutritional fields and for the interested public' - Richard Evans Schultes, Botanical Museum of Harvard University. 'Not many botanists could write a book like this one: a bilingual one, fluent in Chinese, could tap the enormous literature available in that language; a meticulous one could assemble the information and organise it into a manuscript, a botanist who enjoys cooking could develop recipes utilising them so that readers might try the plants for themselves' - George W. Staples, III, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Dr. Hu Shiu-ying was educated in China before the Second World War. She later attended Harvard University where she was awarded a doctoral degree in 1949. She has established herself as one of the most distinguished research scientists in the field of plant taxonomy during the past fifty years in Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. She was a visiting professor in the Department of Biology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is still a senior college tutor at Chung Chi College which is one of the University's foundation colleges. In this book, herbalist Ron Teeguarden has compiled an encyclopedia of the world's most ancient and popular methods of health care: Chinese tonic herbalism. ESCOP Monographs: The Scientific Foundation for Herbal Medicinal Products
MILLS Simon Y.

568pp

This book marks a new authority on herbal medicine. Following the indispensable pioneering work of the Commission E in Germany, ESCOP has taken the lead role across Europe over the past decade in reviewing the therapeutic uses of herbal medicinal products. This is now recognised by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency, which formally receives ESCOP monographs as a basis for core dossiers on herbal medicines. Initial funding for the enterprise was provided by the European Commission. ESCOP, representing national phytotherapy associations across Europe, is uniquely placed to provide an international consensus. Preparation of the monographs by the ESCOP Scientific Committee has involved delegates from 15 countries with the assistance of numerous external experts on herbal medicine and an eminent Board of Supervising Editors. Sixty ESCOP monographs were published during the late 1990s. All have been updated and expanded, and this second edition includes a further 20 monographs. The text constitutes an up-to-date review of scientific information on the therapeutic uses of herbal medicines, including indications, dosage, contra-indications, interactions and undesirable effects, together with summaries of pharmacological, clinical and toxicological data. It is extensively referenced to scientific literature - almost 5,000 full citations appear in the book. The ESCOP monographs are an invaluable resource for health professionals, regulators, manufacturers and many others. They provide the evidence base for clinical use of herbal medicinal products. An Introduction to Chinese Herbal Medicine: With Particular Reference to the Chinese Umbelliferae
WRIGHT Mark

300 x 210mm. 536pp

A book that's ahead of its time - it anticipates where Chinese herbal medicine is going in the Western world, rather than just about where it currently is.

Now a mandatory text at London's University of Westminster's Chinese herbal medicine course.

'... a considerable and original publication' - Charles Buck

'... should at least be an inclusion on all college and university reading lists. I would also commend it to practitioners keen on exploring further study in materia medica' - Brian May

'This book is a very welcome addition to the literature on Chinese herbs ... It contains a vast amount of information not otherwise available in the English language ... This book is to be commended to anyone who is interested in any facet of Chinese herbal medicines, but particularly their history and botany' - Professor Elizabeth Williamson, School of Pharmacy, University of Reading, UK in Phytotherapeutic Research

'The present text differs from other CHM publications in that it uniquely presents CHMs ... in a multidisciplinary way ... Of particular note are the careful explanations of the traditional Chinese classifications and concept of toxicity and of herb-herb interactions, ... information that is seldom presented by other books on Chinese medicinal plants.

'... three sections introducing botany, phytochemistry and pharmacokinetics ... provide basic information without being superficial and are written in a simple, explicit style ... It is pleasing to see such an emphasis on phytochemistry... this is sometimes overlooked or ignored in other herbal texts ... Likewise, the section on pharmacokinetics is laudable.

'The book does provide a very readable introduction to conventional disciplines - botany, phytochemistry, pharmacokinetics - relevant to CHM, and would be a useful text for students and practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine who need background in these areas with a herbal twist ... It will be a useful addition to the libraries of schools of pharmacy, chemistry, botany and other health- and plant-related disciplines' - Joanne Barnes, School of Pharmacy, University of London in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (99), July, 2005

Herbs are discrete botanical entities; their phytochemical constituents both characterise their botanical type and provide the medium for pharmacological effect. The ethos underpinning the whole book is that phytochemists, botanists, biomedical doctors and Chinese herbalists should be co-operatively exploring the interfaces between these allied disciplines and should therefore be broadly conversant with their principal theories and terminologies.

The book considers Chinese medicine to be medically useful. Although it acknowledges that herbs are pharmacologically active because of their phytochemical constituents, it does not argue for the subsuming of Chinese herbal medicine into biomedicine. Rather, it views both the Chinese medical (Yin/Yang, Qi/Blood, meridians, etc) and biomedical (electro-biochemical) models as having their own strengths, but believes there to be potential for collaborative benefit in respect both of acquiring medical benefits and avoiding iatrogenicity and abreactions.

Presently, much of the phytochemical, pharmacological and medical research undertaken on 'herbs' is carried out on the wrong species, or the wrong part of the right species, or on a herb prepared in a way not representative of Chinese herbal medicine. Additionally, much research is in vitro, and cannot necessarily be extrapolated to in vivo use. To complicate the situation further, herbalists are often botanically imprecise as to what they intend by a particular herb name. The consequence of botanical imprecision and lack of communication is that results of research are unhelpful or misleading; this is a wasted resource.

Traditional Chinese Medicines. Molecular Structures, Natural Sources & Applications
YAN X., ZHOU J. & XIE G. (compilers)

1048pp

This new reference is a remarkable achievement in the fields of chemistry and medicine. For many centuries, medical practice has developed in China along a path that is quite distinct from that in the West. For medicinal agents, the Chinese looked to other living systems, especially plants. The natural materials in the Chinese materia medica far outnumber those found in the European and American pharmacopoeia.
The use of Chinese medicines over such a long period of time has resulted in a large body of knowledge of the relationship between natural products and their biological activity. This knowledge, written in Chinese, has been anecdotal and has never before been fully introduced in the English language.
However, recent extensive advances in chemistry and biochemistry have facilitated the use of chemical information as a basis for the description of materials used in Chinese medical practice. A systematic effort has been undertaken in the Chinese Academy of Sciences to identify the structure-activity relationships resulting from the linkage of chemistry and medicine permitted by this data. No systematic description of the chemical structures of compounds active in traditional Chinese medicines has existed in the English language until now. Traditional Chinese Medicines is a landmark publication in drug and medical science.
Traditional Chinese Medicines contains data on over 6,800 chemicals which are known to be present in 1,500 medicinally useful plants (or animals) and which are thought to be responsible for the medicinal effect of the plant or its extracts. The chemistry of the major active components of each plant and the effects and indications of the medicines are described in this exhaustively indexed reference. Contained within this valuable book are many pharmacological relationships which should provide compelling rationales for new drug development efforts. Thus a synthesis of Chinese and Western medicinal chemistry may begin with the information that is presented Traditional Chinese Medicines.

Although there are already a few English-language publications about the theory and applications of Chinese materia medica, little has been written about their chemical and pharmacological nature in relation to traditional classification and properties. This volume fills a long-existing gap in the English medical and pharmaceutical literature by providing both traditional and modern scientific information. It also features the theories and concepts from Western medical perspectives, and the sources, production, and quality control of Chinese materia medica. Chinese Materia Medica: Chemistry, Pharmacology & Applications can be used both as a reference and as a textbook for specialised university and on-the-job training courses. Ginseng Dreams: The Secret World of America's Most Valuable Plant
JOHANNSEN Kristin

225 x 145mm. Was $79.95. NOW $10.00 232pp

For thousands of years cultures around the world have relied on herbal medicine for healing. Only recently have those in the West flocked to once-suspect botanical treatments for the promise of good health and longevity. Among the most treasured of these plants is American ginseng, revered by millions of Asians as a virtual panacea that sustains every system of the human body. In Ginseng Dreams, Kristin Johannsen chronicles the remarkable world of the mysterious plant that commands as much as US$2000 per 450 grams. She unfolds ginseng's history and its future through the stories of seven people whose lives centre on it: a huckster, a field researcher, a farmer, a ginseng 'missionary', a criminal investigator, a broker, and a cancer researcher. Each of them brings a different perspective to the elusive root - and each is consumed by a different dream. Despite its venerable past and medicinal promise, American ginseng faces an uncertain future. Urban sprawl and environmental destruction threaten its fragile forest habitat, and the law provides little recourse against ginseng thieves who roam the backwoods. One step away from endangered species status, this precious plant of so much promise could soon be lost to us forever. Ginseng Dreams tells the extraordinary story of a natural treasure and the spell it casts on those who seek it. Kristin Johannsen, a travel and environmental writer, is the coauthor of Ecotourism in Appalachia: Marketing the Mountains. Her articles have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Mother Jones, and many other publications. 'For many, ginseng holds the promise of perfect health and miracle cures. Johannsen shows that, for just as many, ginseng holds an even more American dream - that of instant riches' - Publishers Weekly 'Johannsen paints a clear picture of the mythic nature of ginseng: its medicinal properties, commercial vagaries, and finicky growth requirements leading to gold rush-style boom or bust cycles. While other writers have focused on how to produce and use ginseng, Johannsen instead writes with a journalist's eye, poking into the offbeat nooks and crannies of this mysterious plant' - Library Journal 'This is a narrative that sings of the earth and the people's relationship to that land. It is the story of a humble root that bears the promise of health and wealth and happiness' - Ron Pen, University of Kentucky 'Kristin Johannsen reveals the fascinating, and often hidden, world of American ginseng through the stories of the people who inhabit it. She describes, with equal grace and felicity, the centuries-old culture of 'sang diggin' that pervades the hills and hollows of Appalachia; the dramatic contrast between Hong Kong's towering glass skyscrapers and the modest traditional medicine shops that thrive in their shadows; the enticing but uncertain enterprise of ginseng farming; and the compelling new western research evidencing ginseng's efficacy (long accepted in China) as both aphrodisiac and cancer treatment' - W. The first book to exclusively use Chinese medical theories and terminology to guide practitioners of Chinese medicine in the use of Western herbs.

> Written entirely according to the theory, diagnosis, and treatment paradigm of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)

> Explains how to combine and modify the standard TCM formulas to non-Chinese herbs suitable for Western practitioners

> Includes 58 monographs of common Western healing herbs, detailing how each plant is used clinically

The ever-growing number of Chinese medicine practitioners in the West has brought about an amalgamation of many styles of Chinese medicine and various other forms of medicine from around the world. This book addresses the increasing demand for knowledge of how to integrate plants from outside the standard Chinese materia medica into the fold of Chinese medical practices in the West. It is the first in-depth guide to using Western herbs exclusively according to the theories, diagnoses, and treatments of traditional Chinese medicine that harmonizes the unique terminology and theories of TCM with other botanical medicines.

The book contains 58 monographs, illustrated with full-color photographs, of herbs commonly used by Western herbalists. Each herb is grouped by the basic categorization for medicinals in Chinese medicine, such as Herbs that Resolve the Exterior and Herbs that Regulate Blood. The monographs detail the energetics, function and indication, channels entered, dosage and preparation, and contraindications of each plant. The author also explains how to use the herbs to modify standard formulas used in everyday Chinese herbal medicine, based on his own clinical experience. An appendix of Western Analogs for Chinese Herbs further highlights 40 Chinese medicinals that have related species growing in the West.

Ten Lectures on the Use of Medicinals - From the Personal Experience of Jiao Shu-de (Jiao Shu De Yong Fang Shi Jiang)
JIAO Shu-De

255 x 175mm Student/Practitioner Price $85.00 712pp

This text is a fine example of how clinical medicine can be successfully delivered to students and practitioners. During his more than 60 years of clinical experience, Jiao Shu-De has taught a range of students from barefoot doctors to advanced graduates of China’s top traditional medical schools, and has developed considerable skills in transmitting Chinese medicine. His lectures and his numerous published works give students and practitioners access to the knowledge and skill of one of the most eminent living teachers and writers in the field. Dr. Jiao discusses approximately 300 Chinese medicinal herb substances in practical terms. Each section begins with basic information about a given substance such as taste, temperature, and entering channels, followed by a discussion of the functions and indications for the substance. Here, Dr. Jiao gives details of specific practical applications for each medicinal, including representative formulas for each given function, and also information about specific preparations and dosages, and comparisons with other medicinals having similar or related actions. Ten Lectures supplements standard Chinese materia medica with copious detail on clinical applications from a personal clinical experience - information about the medicinals that is not available in any current English-language materia medica. For example, information comparing and contrasting medicinals having similar functions can help practitioners make better clinical decisions. Dr. Jiao also discusses a specific medicinal’s actions in the context of well-known and frequently used formulas. Within practical discussions of medicinal agents, he explains fundamental theory, allowing all levels of student or practitioner to gain increased understanding. Dr. Jiao elucidates information that a practitioner may have already memorised but in a way that allows for better clinical implementation. The Preface provides critical information about the study of the materia medica and the use of prescriptions. The final chapter discusses formula organisation with specific examples from Dr. Jiao’s own clinical experience. Although Dr. Jiao stresses the importance of using the results of modern scientific research in order to advance the study and development of traditional Chinese medicine, he nonetheless places equal importance on the need to view these results in the context of the theories of traditional medicine. He is disturbed by the tendency for modern physicians to lose sight of traditional theories and principles in the face of biomedical research. When asked about this, he replied that the physicians of antiquity didn’t know the word 'hepatitis,' but they could treat it without knowing anything about liver enzymes or antigen/antibody titers. He advocates a research methodology that he describes as ‘carrying on tradition, choosing the strong points, highlighting the distinguishing traits, and developing new ideas.’ (For this item please quote stock ID 14513) ISBN: 0978091211165

'Clearing the murky clouds of misconception!' Ten Lecutures on the Use of Chinese Formulas, like Professor Jiao's Ten Lectures on the Use of Chinese Medicinals is read by virtually every student of Chinese medicine in China. Professor Jiao is not only a nationally-recognised master but also a teacher and author whose works are considered essential for the aspiring Chinese physician. Jiao Shu-De's theories and extensive knowledge of Chinese medicinals culminate in these lectures on formulas. Here Professor Jiao moves beyond theory and provides us with the most practical and obtainable information for use in everyday clinical situations. Those who apply Jiao's knowledge to their own patients find the results to be outstanding. His work is an essential guide for answering the questions and solving the problems that clinicians face in everyday practice. Jiao has compiled over 200 commonly used traditional formulas and has further added several dozen formulas from his own experience. This information is presented as a series of ten lectures: Lecture 1 covers issues that one must pay attention to in clinically applying formulas. Lecture 2 discusses formulas that treat the qi, rectify the blood, and supplement and nurture. Lecture 3 discusses dispersing formulas, harmonising formulas, and formulas that simultaneously treat the exterior and interior. Lecture 4 discusses wind-expelling formulas, cold-expelling formulas, and damp-expelling formulas. While Lecture 5 is about formulas that clear fire, disperse summerheat, and moisten dryness, Lecture 6 discusses phlegm-eliminating formulas, abductive-dispersing formulas, and offensive-precipitation formulas. Lecture 7 discusses ejecting formulas, astringing and securing formulas, and insect-killing formulas; Lecture 8 discusses heavy-settling formulas, toxin-resolving formulas, and cancer-preventing formulas; and Lecture 9 discusses commonly used gynaecological and paediatric formulas. Lecture 10 introduces a few of Jiao’s own empirical formulas. As you read this book you feel as though murky clouds of misconception have been pulled from your mind. Clinical Experience of Dr Shi Neng-Yun
SHI Neng-Yun

230 x 150mm 108pp

This book differs from the majority of Chinese acupuncture textbooks because it is not government sponsored and is not bound by a predetermined curriculum. The work is written in the spirit of teacher to apprentice that has characterised the transmission of this information for hundreds of years. In the pages of this book, Dr. Shi speaks directly to the student, imparting what he has learned in his many years of study and practice. The treatments for the more than 50 disorders covered are those that Dr. Shi used at Xiamen Chinese Medicine Hospital, and the dozen or so case studies are also from his practice there. The location of points and methods of treatment discussed herein do not necessarily conform to the mainstream of Chinese medicine that is taught in the institutions of modern China, but instead are part of a living tradition handed down from teacher to student. As the tradition was given to him, Dr. Shi here hands it to us (from the Translator's Foreword). Herbal Emissaries Bringing Chinese Herbs to the West
FOSTER Steven & YUE Chongxi

356 pp

Since 1949, China has worked to integrate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern Western medicine, so that today both systems are used, along with a blend of the two. TCM is now researched using scientific methods at institutions such as the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, where Chongxi is a pharmacognosist. He has also authored numerous works on herbal medicine. Foster has authored several herb books (and coauthored the Peterson Field Guide to Medicinal Plants , Houghton, 1990). The authors introduce Western readers to a blend of the two systems by describing about 50 plants used in TCM that are also known to Westerners as ornamentals, weeds, or herbs (e.g., day lilies, gardenias, honeysuckle, privet, and forsythia). They cover in detail the uses, history, dosage, descriptions, cultivation, and processing of each plant. An excellent resource for alternative medicine collections.

205 x 130mm 792pp

The Chinese Herbalist’s Handbook is a concise quick-reference manual for over 500 standard herbal formulas used in Chinese medicine. In particular, it is designed to make formula modification and individual herb prescribing easily accessible to students and practitioners of Oriental medicine. In the main part, the formulas are organised according to zang fu syndromes, the six divisions and the six and four stages, as well as selected internal medicine disorders. Each formula is detailed with its Mandarin, English, and commercial extract name, and presents ingredients, dosages, main indications, contraindications and special preparation methods. The text includes a clinical quick-reference to over 400 single herbs. This section is unique in that it breaks down the materia medica treatment categories into smaller, more specific subcategories. The practitioner is therefore guided in selecting herbs to modify standard formulas, and can thereby accurately match each individual condition as it presents. The tables of herbal preparation methods include over 400 single herbs, and present their preparation considerations (e.g. cooking requirements, toxicity, contraindications, combining cautions, special formulas available, etc). Cross-reference tables of herb names all include their pinyin, Mandarin, pharmaceutical, botanical and common English names. Helpful appendices include valuable practical information for students and new practitioners starting a pharmacy, and as well as current Chinese herb suppliers. The book concludes with indexes of the formulas and single herbs in both Mandarin and English, as well as a separate index of syndromes and disharmonies. The author has drawn heavily from well-known texts including Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica and Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies to provide concise information that is quickly accessible. Mending the Web of Life
CALL Elizabeth

250pp

The author addresses loss of biodiversity as manifested in the world of Chinese medicine, specifically the non-sustainable use of endangered species in formulas. "The process that infuses Chinese medicine seeks to work with nature, complement body processes, and reconnect and integrate the physiological and psychological possibilities within the entire being. Most Chinese medicine practitioners actively use their five senses in patient evaluation. ... The organic approach of Chinese medicine fosters the use of intuition, integrated with critical thinking, academic knowledge, and practical experience. Unfortunately, a split from nature also has occurred in Chinese medicine, the philosophy of which is applied only in clinical practice. For example, some Chinese doctors justify their use of endangered animals, because they insist that people are more important than animals. This position ignores the contributions of nature to people and wedges people and nature in conflicting opposition. So, while these individuals do not consider humans to be isolated from nature, they place humans in the central position (much like in the West), which maintains their distance from the web of life." She sounds a call to the Chinese medicine profession to assume a responsible role in the survival of the species referenced in its materia medica, as well as in the preservation of its medicine for future generations. This is a thoughtful, thoroughly researched book that will not only be of interest to any student or practitioner in the field, but will serve as an important reminder of the vast and mutifaceted responsibilities of the healer that may focus on the patient but that extend to the species, the planet, and beyond. Clinical Applications of Ayurvedic & Chinese Medicine: Monographs for the Western Herbal Practitioner

Herbal medicine is practised in every country of the world without exception. In fact, the World Health Organisation has estimated that more than 75% of the world’s population still use the services of herbalists for the treatment of ill-health. In response to new pharmacological and clinical information on exotic plants being made available through modern science, Western phytotherapists face an important decision: do they ignore this useful information, or do they attempt to incorporate these plants into their daily practice? As global communication reaches new heights, and the stresses of ever increasing industrialisation create disease common to all countries, modern phytotherapy must rise to the challenge. The purpose of this book is to provide comprehensive monographs on important Ayurvedic and Chinese herbs in a form which is suited to the practitioner of Western herbal medicine. The monographs emphasise the large body of pharmacological and clinical information which is now available for the plants. The monographs are intended to be a useful tool for students and also for practitioners who wish to extend their therapeutic options. (For this item please quote stock ID 4623) ISBN: 9780646295022

Jade Remedies: Chinese Herbal Reference, Volume 1
HOLMES Peter

280 x 215mm 442pp

Jade Remedies (in two volumes) is a comprehensive, detailed and contemporary reference source for the remedies used in Oriental herbal medicine. Based on years of research into historical and modern sources, it presents over 450 plant, mineral and animal remedies used worldwide in Chinese medicine. The remedies are divided into four types: ‘restoratives’, ‘stimulants’, ‘relaxants’, and ‘sedatives’. The text provides up-to-date information on botanical sources, plant habits, biochemistry, pharmacology, energetic properties, therapeutic actions and indications, preparation forms, dosages, cautions and contraindications. The primary remedies are illustrated with botanically accurate wood-blocks prints of the plants in the wild form from the Zhi Wu Ming Shi Tu Kao of 1848, the Chinese manual of medicinal plants illustrations. Jade Remedies represents three ‘firsts’. One, it spells out clearly and concisely the functions and uses of Chinese herbs in easily understood Western terms. Two, it summarises, distils and evaluates the modern pharmacological uses of Oriental remedies by Western medical doctors in East Asia. Three, it may be the first published text that organises the Oriental Materia Medica according to Western body systems rather than the traditional energetic treatment categories. The information on these remedies sought by the student, practitioner or researcher unfamiliar with Oriental medicine is immediately available. As a Western rendition of the Oriental Materia Medica, Jade Remedies represents a much-needed complement to the standard Oriental version (whether in the Western of Chinese language). Nevertheless, for each remedy the text retains the traditional usage by symptom picture, or pattern of disharmony - indications familiar to Oriental practitioners. By including Western and Oriental information side-by-side, it forms a valuable bridge between Western and Oriental pathology and herbal therapeutics, allowing practitioners of both systems to better understand each other’s therapeutic rationales. Ten Key Formula Families in Chinese Medicine
HUANG Huang, MAX Michael (translator)

230 x 150 mm Student/Practitioner Price $49.25 337 pp

Huang Huang, a professor at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most influential physicians and teachers in Chinese medicine today. His most popular work, Ten Key Formula Families in Chinese Medicine, has been reprinted many times in China, translated into Japanese, and republished in Taiwan. It has now been translated into English by Michael Max. In this work, Dr. Huang discusses the core aspects of the ten most important families of formulas in the classical formula tradition in a way that is both profound and accessible. By introducing the concept of constitutions and the attendant vulnerabilities of those constitutions to certain types of problems and symptoms, he hands the reader a very useful key to understanding how and when to use these formulas in the modern clinic. The ten families of formulas are grouped around the following herbs:

> Cinnamon - Cinnamomi Ramulus (guì zhï)
> Ephedra - Ephedrae Herba (má huáng)
> Bupleurum - Bupleuri Radix (chái hú)
> Gypsum - Gypsum fibrosum (shí gäo)
> Rhubarb - Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (dà huáng)
> Coptis - Coptidis Rhizoma (huáng lián)
> Aconite Accessory Root - Aconiti Radix lateralis preparata (zhì fù zî)
> Dried Ginger - Zingiberis Rhizoma (gän jiäng)
> Astragalus - Astragali Radix (huáng qí)
> Pinellia - Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum (zhì bàn xià)

For each herb family, Dr. Huang provides an introduction to the relevant constitutional aspects and significant indicators to look for when deciding whether a member of each herb family is appropriate for a particular patient. He then describes the most important and useful members of the herb family, including brief discussions of relevant research.

About the Author
Dr. Huang Huang is a professor at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A prolific writer and editor, he has studied and worked in Japan, lectured widely throughout China, and recently in the United States and Australia as well. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Materia Medica Clinical Reference & Study Guide
HOLMES Peter & WANG Jing

280 x 220mm 488pp

The TCM Materia Medica Clinical Reference & Study Guide is a quick-reference manual and study guide for the most important 316 classic single herbs used in Chinese medicine. It consists of two parts: The first part presents the individual herbs in 19 chapters, corresponding to the commonly used functional treatment categories. These 320 herbs make up the core Chinese herbal materia medica as it is studied and utilised in Chinese medicine today. Each individual herb is presented in an easy-to-read tabular format, with its clinical functions and indications clearly defined. Its indications are reinforced by examples of typical combinations with other specific herbs. The herb comparison tables found throughout the text help clarify the commonalities and differences among important herbs with similar functions. They serve as both quick-reference tools and study aids, allowing easy differentiation between similar herbs as a means to more precise and effective prescribing. Each chapter ends with Summary Tables of the herbs organised by their qualities and main clinical functions. These tables provide a quick-reference checklist for the practitioner needing to modify formulas, as well as an important study aid. The Study Questions & Answers focus on the theory behind clinical herb usage, without which herb combining and formula modification become impossible. They are designed to stimulate an in-depth understanding of the herbs in their qualities, functions, indications and combinations with other herbs. The second part consists of Key Herb Differentiation and Comparison Tables, which at a glance compares and contrasts the functions, indications and clinical emphases of the most important herbs for treating particular conditions. It serves as a reference tool for modifying formulas in clinical practice by helping in the selection of herbs most consistent with the overall treatment strategy intended.
