Visceral Osteopathy The Peritoneal Organs
WUEHRL Peter, HIRTH Thomas, HELSMOORTEL Jerome

280 x 220 mm 426 pp

`Visceral Osteopathy: The Peritoneal Organs is concerned with the application of osteopathic concepts to the abdominal viscera, specifically the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. It lays out a comprehensive manual approach to these viscera based on physiological research and extensive clinical experience.

The visceral paradigm developed in this book is centered on the mechanical expression of the biological forces within the organs themselves. In this paradigm, the most important aspect of the viscera of the gut is their intrinsic, autonomous regulation. The focus is therefore on the inner mechanical architecture and power centers of the viscera.

Visceral Osteopathy offers a comprehensive and clinically sound system of diagnosis and treatment of the digestive organs, and firmly establishes visceral manipulation in the context of contemporary physiological research.

The diagnostic and therapeutic approaches of visceral osteopathy are described in detail and are accompanied by hundreds of photographs and drawings that clearly illustrate each of the techniques, including an original bi-manual form of palpation for all the viscera. A separate chapter is devoted to each of the peritoneal organs.

Other features of the book:
> Provides concise, up-to-date applied anatomy.
> Includes extensive and well-illustrated descriptions of embryology and its significance in manipulation of the viscera.
> Discusses all major concepts in visceral manipulation and compares different schools of thought.
> Develops the idea of movement as compensation and discusses the benefit of different types of visceral movement.
> Draws an important and useful distinction between intravisceral treatment and indirectly working on the viscera via the fasciae.
> Offers practical tools to differentiate movements according to normal or compensatory activity.
> Looks at the inherent stability of viscera in relation to posture.
> Outlines how visceral problems influence the musculoskeletal and craniosacral systems.
> Provides a glossary of all important terms used in this and other books on visceral manipulation, and an extensive bibliography.
"This new book on visceral osteopathy provides a broad description and explanation with new ideas and insights into this developing subject. Concise and clear explanations are given to describe previous and new theories, based on the most up-to-date research mate¬rial."

Chinese Medical Characters, Volume 4: Four Examination Vocabulary
WISEMAN Nigel & ZHANG Yu Huan

202 pp

This is the fourth volume in this series. Like the previous three volumes of the Chinese Medical Characters series this text presents both simplified and complex forms for 100 characters that are frequently encountered in diagnosis, providing an in-depth look at the most commonly used characters in case records and diagnostic texts. Significs and stroke counts, commonly used equivalents, character composition, explanation of meaning, and examples of character combinations are included. The stroke sequence showing how to write the character is presented, and space for students to practice writing the characters is provided. The appendix contains a systematic list of the characters presented in the text as well as all characters presented in Volumes One and Two of the series. By gaining familiarity with the words and meanings that compose the language of the traditional four examinations, readers will discover additional insights into the concepts themselves. The frequent occurrence of these characters in medical Chinese makes this text a must for any practitioner seeking to expand their knowledge of Chinese language and medicinal therapy.

People propose ideas about Chinese medical language that are not justified by the facts. Among these myths is the idea that Chinese medical language is so "fuzzy," with so many variable meanings that it cannot be translated without the intervention of someone with very special qualities. This is not the case. See this very interesting comparison which contains the entire Chinese text of Ten Lectures on the Use of Formulas by Professor Jiao Shu-de. This comparison color-codes every character that you will learn how to read in each of the "Chinese Character" books. What it demonstrates is that with a relatively small vocabulary, and a reasonable understanding of Chinese grammar, you can read very useful information in Chinese. Clearly, this level of knowledge does not make you a translator or an expert on the linguistics of the Chinese language. However, it does give you access to information that you might otherwise depend upon others to provide.

Kampo: A Clinical Guide to Theory and Practice
KEISETSU Otsuka

Now in Stock 164 pp

Kampo: A Clinical Guide to Theory and Practice provides an excellent overview of Kampo in modern society and goes on to present an historical perspective from practitioners in Japan and the west. The translation opens with Dr Otsuka’s personal reflections on how to study Kampo, the legal and practical status of Kampo practitioners when he began practice and includes clinical anecdotes. The book summarizes diagnostic theory and methodology then leads onto a section including 80 principal formulas followed by a therapeutic section organized according to allopathic definitions of disease. YANG Yifan

Traditionally the study of Chinese herbal formulas has involved memorizing hundreds of classic formulas, and recognizing and summarizing the relevant treatment rules and formula-making strategies in order to create appropriate formulas for treatment. This new book by Yifan Yang, author of Chinese Herbal Medicines: Comparisons and Characteristics (which pioneered the comparative method of single herb study), introduces a new approach to formula study. The reader is shown how to use the basic treatment rules and composition strategies, abstracted from hundreds of formulas, in order to create individual formulas for treating a variety of syndromes. The method is clear and easy to understand, with a systematic approach and an emphasis on essential knowledge. In this title, 19 common syndromes and 60 sub-syndromes are described and discussed in detail, illustrated with clear line drawings. Chinese diagnosis of syndromes are related to the Western disease names. Treatment principles and plans are given for each syndrome. Principles of herb selection are introduced with recommendations and explanations of specific herbs in relation to each syndrome.

166 classic formulas are given as examples. Treatment strategies in complicated syndromes, treatment sequences, cautionary advice for herbs and combinations with Western drugs, dosage management in a variety of conditions and commonly used pairs of herbs are all discussed. Detailed indexes and contents lists facilitate quick reference and searching within the text. Chinese Herbal Formulas: Treatment Principles and Composition Strategies is written by an experienced practitioner and lecturer of Chinese herbal medicine. Reproducing Women: Medicine, Metaphor, and Childbirth in Late Imperial China
WU Yili

357pp

This innovative book uses the lens of cultural history to examine the development of medicine in Qing dynasty China. Focusing on the specialty of "medicine for women"(fuke), Yi-Li Wu explores the material and ideological issues associated with childbearing in the late imperial period. She draws on a rich array of medical writings that circulated in seventeenth- to nineteenth-century China to analyze the points of convergence and contention that shaped people's views of women's reproductive diseases. These points of contention touched on fundamental issues: How different were women's bodies from men's? What drugs were best for promoting conception and preventing miscarriage? Was childbirth inherently dangerous? And who was best qualified to judge? Wu shows that late imperial medicine approached these questions with a new, positive perspective.

Wan's Clinical Application of Chinese Medicine: Scientific Practice of Diagnosis, Treatment and Therapeutic Monitoring
REPETI George, MICOZZI Marc

Student/Practitioner Price $30.55 160pp

Much of acupuncture practice in the West remains incomplete or less potent because it has been based upon particular interpretations often by only one individual, in translation. The broad, diverse and ancient practices of Chinese medicine are often misconstrued and overshadowed by the more modern Traditional Chinese Medicine in Westernised texts. This book places more powerful tools in the hands of practitioners and expands our knowledge of the full potential of Chinese medical practices. Grandmaster Wan was a well known doctor of Chinese medicine, who in the traditional way of Chinese teaching took on only a handful of students throughout his life, one of whom was Giorgio Repeti. The author's extensive notes, derived from his years of discipleship to Grandmaster Wan, form the basis of this book, and he has in the core of the book resisted any temptation to include his own views or amend those of the teacher. The approach described was characterised by Grandmaster Wan as the 3E approach (easy, economical and efficient), and is deceptively simple. It is, however, an approach that can only fully be comprehended through reflection and experience. The book covers the basic principles of diagnosis, with chapters on pulse and tongue diagnosis. A key chapter on acupuncture provides clear directives for treatment that relies on simple yet powerful underpinning principles, and challenges the much more complex approach to acupuncture commonly taught in the West. Herbal medicines and herbal treatments for cold, warm and hot diseases are also covered. This clinically based text will provide an essential vademecum for practitioners of Chinese medicine, and a thoughtful introduction for students that will carry them through to their own practice. An Exposition on the Eight Extraordinary Vessels: Acupuncture, Alchemy and Herbal Medicine
CHACE Charles & SHIMA Miki

Student/Practitioner Price $55.20 502 pp

Li Shi-Zhen's Exposition on the Eight Extraordinary Vessels (Qi jing ba mai kao) is among the most remarkable texts in the Chinese medical literature. Bringing together writings on acupuncture, herbal medicine, and internal cultivation (nei dan), it argues that aspiring adepts and physicians alike must understand the full scope of the extraordinary vessels if they hope to achieve their respective goals.

Although the Exposition is a cornerstone of the extraordinary vessel literature, it is rarely, if ever, considered on its own terms. Li's approach to extraordinary vessel acupuncture and herbal medicine reflects a perspective that differs considerably from the strategies familiar to most modern readers. His work on the extraordinary vessels is every bit as innovative in its own milieu as his other seminal writings, Pulse Studies of the Lakeside [Recluse] (Bin-Hu mai xue) and Comprehensive Outline of the Materia Medica (Ben cao gang mu), are in theirs.

This volume is the first translation of the Exposition published in English, and it is among the most comprehensive discussions of the text available in any language. It is divided into five parts. Part I provides an introductory overview of the main themes running throughout the text: theory, acupuncture, herbal medicine, internal alchemy, and pulse diagnosis. Part II contains the Chinese text and translation of the Exposition itself. Part III presents extensive commentaries on the text, and Part IV discusses the influence of Li Shi-Zhen's extraordinary vessel writings on subsequent pre-modern and modern physicians. Part V consists of appendices containing tables of herbs, prescriptions, acupuncture holes, and the people and books mentioned in the Exposition. There is also an extensive bibliography, point/hole and herb/formula index, and general index.

Glossary of Chinese Medicine
LI Tian and LACHNER Anton

In Stock Now 392 pp

Anyone who learns the skills of acupuncture or who extends his knowledge of TCM is inevitably confronted with terms which hitherto had always meant something different to him or her. Take the use of the word 'wind', for example, to refer to a pathogenic factor contributing to illnesses - rather than its sense as a climatic factor. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that, in most books, these terms are not used in a clear and uniform way. One of the many examples is the Chinese term 'xu' which is translated as 'insufficiency' but also as 'deficiency' or 'severity' and is often not even used consistently within one and the same publication. This glossary presents all the Chinese terms (in Chinese characters and in Pinyin script) that are relevant to TCM and provides their English translations. It also provides an explanation of how, for example, the location or the function of an acupuncture point can be concluded from its name. A CD-ROM with recordings of the authors speaking all the presented Pinyin terms in Chinese is included with this book to enable the reader to acquire the correct pronunciation.

Cha Dao The Way of Tea, Tea as a Way of Life
Towler, Solala

Illustrations 176 pp

In China, the art and practice of drinking tea is about much more than merely soaking leaves in a cup of hot water. The tradition is rooted in Daoism, and emerged from a philosophy that honoured living a life of grace and gratitude, balance and harmony, and fulfilment and enjoyment - what the ancient Chinese called Cha Dao, or the Way of Tea. Cha Dao takes us on a fascinating journey through the Way of Tea, from its origins in the sacred mountains and temples of ancient China, through its links to Daoist concepts such as Wu Wei or non-striving and the Value of Worthlessness, to the affinity between Tea Mind and the Japanese spirit of Zen. Interspersed are a liberal helping of quotes from the great tea masters of the past, anecdotes from the author's own trips to China, and traditional tea stories from China and Japan. A Clinician's Guide to Using Granule Extracts
BRAND Eric

230 x 150 mm Highly Recommended
242pp

Finally, a book on the intelligent and informed use of granule extracts, both as singles and in formulas!

In recent years, granules have become the most popular delivery form for Chinese herbal medicine in the West. However, while the convenience, portability, and efficacy of granules has revolutionized professional herbal medicine, many practitioners have not been exposed to a systematic discussion of critical issues such as dosage and clinical strategies.

Over the past 40 years, different approaches to dosage and formulation have arisen in Taiwan, Japan, and mainland China. While granule efficacy can be maximized by observing modern clinical trends in Asia, resources that shed light on this subject are few and far between. In an effort to bridge this knowledge gap, Eric Brand has travelled to factories, hospitals, and clinics throughout Asia to research the manufacturing and clinical trends in the world of granules.

In this practical granule handbook for clinicians, Eric covers:
> Effective dosing strategies
> Methods of formula combining
> Common clinical approaches seen in mainland China and Taiwan
> Concentration ratios and their effect on dosage
> Various manufacturing methods and their impact on patient care
> How to set up an efficient pharmacy with attention to good compounding practices

Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen An Annotated Translation of Huang Di's Inner Classic - Basic Questions
UNSCHULD, Paul U., TESSENOW, Hermann

Student/Practitioner Price $212.50 1556 pp

This is the first annotated English translation of the ancient Chinese life sciences text Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen based on an application of rigorous philological principles. The creative reception of so-called TCM in many Western countries has led to a conceptual and clinical reality that is rather distant from its beginnings in Han-dynasty China. It is through a comparison of today’s realities with these beginnings that a realistic awareness may emerge of the process that Chinese medicine has undergone in its adaptation to the values and requirements of modern times. This translation of a 2,000 year-old text introduces readers to ideas, and their linguistic expression, developed in Han China in the context of the manipulation of the length and the quality of human life so that it might last as long as possible with minimal physical and mental suffering. To permit an easy comparison of this translation with the original Chinese text, a complete reproduction of the Chinese reference text can be found in A Dictionary of the Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen. The English translation in the present volumes is consecutively marked by numbers referring to both the historical chapters and the pages and lines of the 1983 Chinese edition of the Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen.

Jing Shen A Translation of Huainanzi Chapter 7
ROCHAT DE LA VALLEE Elisabeth and LARRE Claude

130mm x 200 mm Student/Practitioner Price $27.15 124 pp

Jing Shen is the title of the seventh chapter of the Huainanzi, a major Daoist text of the early Chinese Han dynasty. Until recently it has remained relatively unrecognized and only partially translated. Long dismissed as merely a reiteration of earlier writings, its importance as a work in its own right and its role in Chinese intellectual history is only now beginning to be appreciated. Chapter 7, Jing Shen – vital or embodied spirit – examines the origins of life and the integral place of human beings within the cosmos. As a contemporary text to the Huangdi Neijing, The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, it is of interest to practitioners of Chinese medicine as well as to the more general reader. This is a group translation, made under the aegis of Claude Larre and Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée.

Other-Worldly Making Chinese Medicine Through Transnational Frames
ZHAN Mei

8 illustrations 240 pp

Traditional Chinese medicine is often portrayed as an enduring system of therapeutic knowledge that has become globalized in recent decades. In "Other-Worldly", Mei Zhan argues that the discourses and practices called 'traditional Chinese medicine' are made through, rather than prior to, translocal encounters and entanglements. Zhan spent a decade following practitioners, teachers, and advocates of Chinese medicine through clinics, hospitals, schools, and grassroots organizations in Shanghai and the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on that ethnographic research, she demonstrates that the everyday practice of Chinese medicine is about much more than writing herbal prescriptions and inserting acupuncture needles. 'Traditional Chinese medicine' is also made and remade through efforts to create a preventive medicine for the 'proletariat world', reinvent it for cosmopolitan middle-class aspirations, produce clinical 'miracles', translate knowledge and authority, and negotiate marketing strategies and medical ethics. Whether discussing the presentation of Chinese medicine at a health fair sponsored by a Silicon Valley corporation, or how the inclusion of a traditional Chinese medicine clinic authenticates the 'California' appeal of an upscale residential neighbourhood in Shanghai, Zhan emphasizes that unexpected encounters and interactions are not anomalies in the structure of Chinese medicine. Instead, they are constitutive of its irreducibly complex and open-ended worlds. Zhan proposes an ethnography of 'worlding' as an analytic for engaging and illuminating emergent cultural processes such as those she describes. Rather than taking 'cultural difference' as the starting point for anthropological inquiries, this analytic emphasizes how various terms of difference - for example, 'traditional', 'Chinese', and 'medicine' - are invented, negotiated, and deployed translocally. "Other-Worldly" is a theoretically innovative and ethnographically rich account of the worlding of Chinese medicine. (For this item please quote stock ID 35864) ISBN: 9780822343844

Meridian Circuit Systems: A Channel Based Approach to Pattern Identification
SPEARS James

Student/Practitioner Price $37.36 183 pp

This book offers a channel-based approach to pattern identification, termed Meridian Circuit Systems by the author, which is identified as a form of syndrome differentiation used independently of other methods or along with conventional forms of pattern identification. It takes as its starting point the identification of 3 meridians that are expressing symptoms, then determines the relationship the affected meridians share with other channels. After the symptomatic meridians and their connecting channels have been established, Meridian Circuit Systems theory aims at identifying a circuit that consists of four interconnected meridians. The author draws from classical sources including the Nei Jing, Shang Han Lun, five-element theory, TCM, and expert clinicians including Master Tung and Dr. Richard Tan.

The author describes and details the five systems at the foundation of Meridian Circuit Systems theory: the paired 3-yin and 3-yang meridians; the zang fu bei tang pairings explicated originally in the Yi Xie Ru Men and the Yi Jin Jin Yi, the internal-external meridian relationships, the horary cycle of the 12 meridians, and proximate meridians on the horary cycle. Imaging, mirroring, and needling techniques, case studies, and zang-fu methods of pattern identification are further resources that are described and that can be incorporated to aid practitioners in realizing greater diagnostic and treatment skills.

Muscles and Meridians: The Manipulation of Shape
BEACH Phillip

211 pp

Muscles and Meridians is a unique book that breaks new conceptual ground in the realm of human movement. Firmly based in an understanding of evolutionary and developmental biology, this volume introduces some of the keys that open the way to an understanding of the Contractile Field (CF) model - a novel concept which promotes a fresh approach to exercise and represents a valuable means of understanding and treating musculoskeletal disorders. The CF model represents a whole-organism approach to an appreciation of human movement. The fundamental biomechanical architecture of vertebrates imposes patterns of movement on our spine, patterns that offer the keys needed to begin a more robust understanding of human movement. The CF model suggests that sense organs are embedded in fields of contractility, and that the musculature of the viscera and the role of the kidneys need to be incorporated in this attempt to develop such a model. Fields of contractility are defined, borders between fields are identified, and field interaction considered. The model also suggests a new assessment methodology: the Archetypal Postures.

Many musculoskeletal aches and pains, such as back pain, are non-attributable to a standard tissue-related diagnosis. Rather we need to focus on the interrelationship of many named tissues via the emergence of postures that are deeply embedded in our evolution and childhood development. Archetypal Postures are essential to the 'tune' of the musculoskeletal system. By showing a pattern of correlation, the CF model also sheds light on the Chinese map of the meridians suggesting a theory that unravels the complexity of the ancient map which the modern biosciences have been unable to comprehend or identify. Muscles and Meridians presents an approach to musculoskeletal anatomy which will be widely applicable to all professionals who have an interest in human movement: physiotherapists, osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists, exercise scientists, manual therapists, and personal trainers.

This title deals with ancient Asian practices of cooking with healing herbs and other therapeutic foods, introducing them to Western palates and kitchens. "Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen" reveals how easy it is to tap into the 3,000-year-old secrets of East Asian healing arts. This entertaining and easy-to-use book provides scores of delicious recipes, anecdotes about various herbs and foods, and all you need to know about acquiring ingredients-even if you don't know the difference between a lotus seed and the lotus position. The recipes are simple, easy-to-prepare, and healthy East Asian dishes-still largely unknown in the West, but begging to cross the cultural divide-as well as recipes that might seem familiar, but with an unexpected twist, such as oatmeal with walnuts and goji berries or chicken soup with ginseng. Drawing on family recipes, years of study of traditional Chinese medicine at institutions in China and in the United States, and experience treating patients in the traditional Chinese medical clinic, Wang, Sheir, and Ono put healthy recipes using Chinese herbs at your fingertips to enhance your life, promote a sense of wellbeing, and increase your longevity.

Integrating East Asian Medicine into Contemporary Healthcare
SCHEID Volker G., MACPHERSON Hugh

244 pp

Traditional East Asian healthcare systems have moved rapidly from the fringes of healthcare systems in the West towards the centre over the past 50 years. This change of status for traditional medicines presents their practitioners with both opportunities and challenges as the focus shifts from one of opposition towards one of integration into biomedically dominated healthcare systems. Integrating East Asian Medicine into Contemporary Healthcare examines the opportunities and challenges of integrating East Asian medicine into Western healthcare systems from an interdisciplinary perspective. Volker Scheid and Hugh MacPherson bring together contributions from acknowledged experts from a number of different disciplines - including clinical researchers, Chinese Medicine practitioners, historians, medical anthropologists, experts in the social studies of science, technology and medicine - to examine and debate the impact of the evidence-based medicine movement on the ongoing modernization of East Asian medicines. This book considers the following questions: What are the values, goals and ethics implicit within traditional East Asian medical practices? What claims to effectiveness and safety are made by East Asian medical practice? What is at stake in subjecting these medical practices to biomedical models of evaluation? What constitutes best practice? How is it to be defined and measured? What are the ideologies and politics behind the process of integration of East Asian medical practices into modern health care systems? And what can we learn from a variety of models of integration into contemporary healthcare?

Qin Bo-Wei's 56 Treatment Methods: Writing Precise Prescriptions
WU Bo-Ping (Clinical Commentary)

Student/Practitioner Price $49.25 384 pp

In the spring of 2007, Jason Blalack asked his mentor, Wu Bo-Ping (吴伯平), what was the most important Chinese medical text to translate into English. After a few moments of thought, Dr. Wu presented Jason with a tattered paperback copy of the original edition of Qin Bo-Wei’s New Guidelines for Treatment (治疗新律zhi liao xin lu, c. 1953), a manuscript that for all intents and purposes had been lost during the Cultural Revolution. That is the text that forms the framework of this exciting new book.

Qin Bo-Wei (秦伯未) (1901-1970) was among the most important physicians of the modern era. As a prominent clinician, educator, and scholar, he worked to integrate classical schools of thought and created one of the most coherent systems for understanding Chinese medicine during a critical time of intense turbulence in China’s history. Wu Bo-Ping was one of Dr. Qin’s students and is among the few who are still living today.

Translated and presented to a Western audience for the first time, Qin’s original work is enriched by Dr. Wu’s extensive commentary, which transforms it into a hands-on guide on how to effectively practice herbal medicine.

An excellent clinical manual, this book primarily teaches a method of thinking that serves as a foundation for a lifelong approach to herbal medicine. An understanding of how to use the core concepts presented here allows one to effectively treat the majority of diseases seen in the contemporary clinic.

The text itself is unique in its presentation and differs from other clinical manuals in a number of ways:

> Organized by treatment method. Teaches a way of emulating the thought underlying a prescription without being tied to its specified ingredients or original indications, thereby reflecting the thinking of Chinese medicine’s greatest clinicians. Ultimately, this approach opens up treatment possibilities that are often ignored in conventional textbooks.
> Small number of ingredients. Dr. Qin’s prescriptions contain a small number of precisely combined ingredients, administered in small doses.
> Explains how to use processed medicinals. The book provides detailed explanations about how to use processed medicinals (炮制 páo zhì).
> Based on influential lineage. This text imparts a wealth of clinical knowledge rooted in the tradition of an influential Chinese medicine lineage.
"This book is a major step in the dissemination of Qin Bo-Wei’s ideas. Perhaps more importantly, it represents a highly refined vision of how Chinese medicine can be understood in the West. Here we are presented with much more than a list of signs and symptoms linked to a pattern, which in turn is linked to a fixed formula. Instead, this book illustrates the nuances inherent in every step of the diagnostic and treatment process." – Charles Chace, author of A Qin Bowei Anthology

About the authors

Wu Bo-Ping graduated in the first class of the Beijing College of Chinese Medicine in 1962. He apprenticed for many years with Qin Bo-Wei, becoming one of his most prominent students. A generous and renowned instructor of Chinese medicine in China and abroad, he is best known as an accomplished clinician. He is now retired and lives in Hangzhou.

Jason Blalack is a graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego and maintains a full-time practice in Boulder, Colorado. He studied closely with Dr. Wu Bo-Ping in China over many years.

Pathomechanisms of the Kidney
YAN Shi-Lin & LI Zheng-Hua

255 x 180mm, index, bibliography, footnotes, appendix. Due to be published March 2012 356pp

Pathomechanisms describe the dynamic process through which disease develops and transforms in the body. While pattern diagnosis provides the practitioner with a snapshot picture of the current state of illness, it is a thorough understanding of pathomechanisms that allows one to predict and prevent the progression of disease. A comprehensive knowledge of the pathomechanisms involved in a given case allows treatment to be more holistic, preventative, and effective. In modern China, pathomechanisms have become a major focus of Chinese medical literature and education. Up to now, relatively little of this material has been transmitted to the West, and consequently many practitioners have failed to go beyond pattern diagnosis to examine the underlying disease process that produces the patterns. Thus, pathomechanisms are often described as a 'missing link' in a Westerner's Chinese medical education. This series of texts devoted to pathomechanisms attempts to bridge this gap so that practitioners may advance their knowledge and reap the rewards of greater clinical success.

Pathomechanisms of the Kidney describes the repletion conditions of the kidney, including kidney-channel wind-cold, wind-heat, wind-damp, cold-damp, damp-heat, repletion fire, static blood, phlegm turbidity, stones in the kidney channel, and kidney channel qi stagnation. The second section presents vacuity conditions, including vacuity of kidney yang, of kidney qi, and of kidney yin, insufficiency of kidney essence, dual vacuity of kidney yin and kidney yang, and kidney vacuity verging on desertion.

Each pathomechanism is described in detail with references to its historical development, then further differentiated by the specific aetiological factors. Each subsection discusses the origins and development of ideas relevant to this pathology, then gives the various symptoms, treatment strategies, and specific formulas, often with modifications to address the particular symptoms more directly. It is here that the author offers a review of relevant literature, spanning the entire range of traditional medical literature beginning with the early classics. For each text, he gives the specific quotations and then paraphrases and explains it. This provides the reader a sense of the historical evolution as well as the various clinical perspectives on each pathomechanism. At the conclusion of each section, the author summarizes the information in a useful table that differentiates again by aetiology and then lists specific symptoms in each case. The appendices include a section on modern research, a Chinese-English bibliography in alphabetical order (with both classical texts and journal articles on modern research) and a Chinese bibliography organized by stroke number. Pathomechanisms of the Spleen
YAN Shi-Lin

255 x 180mm, index, bibliography, footnotes, appendix. Student/Practitioner Price $39.90 300pp

Pathomechanisms of the Spleen provides a thorough glimpse into the various manifestations of spleen disease in Chinese medicine.
Part 1 discusses repletion conditions of the spleen, including spleen qi depression, thought and preoccupation stagnating in the spleen, cold-damp encumbering the spleen, phlegm turbidity obstructing the spleen, food and drink damaging the spleen, and static blood accumulating in the spleen - and spleen fire (yang) exuberance - including spleen channel repletion fire and damp-heat brewing in the spleen.
Part 2 presents vacuity conditions, including vacuity of spleen qi, spleen yang, and spleen yin.

The appendices include a section on modern research, a Chinese-English bibliography in alphabetical order (with both classical texts and journal articles on modern research) and a Chinese bibliography organised by stroke number.

Depression is in fact a potentially life-threatening mood disorder, and in recent years, there have been remarkable developments in the treatment of many psycho-emotional disorders. In TCM, practitioners seek the root cause of disease by assessing patterns of disharmony within both body and mind. Because clinical depression is a complex systemic disease, Chinese physicians follow the traditional guideline of "the brain governs the spirit-brightness" by applying integrative medical treatment along with psychotherapy and personalised pattern differentiation. This book introduces the current applications of Chinese formula medicinal while also providing practical integrative treatment methods such as warming yang and opening constraint.

Atlas of Blood and Qi Disorders in Chinese Medicine
ZIYANG Zhao and XUEMEI Li

124 color photos Student/Practitioner Price $49.25 155 pp

In Chinese medicine, qi and blood are the most fundamental elements of the human body, and disorders affecting either of them can give rise to a variety of conditions. Dysfunctions or abnormalities of the channels, collaterals, and the various tissues and organs of the body are all related to changes in the qi and blood. Understanding and treating these disorders is therefore very important in clinical practice.

Atlas of Blood and Qi Disorders in Chinese Medicine provides over a hundred vivid photographic examples of blood and qi disorders drawn from actual clinical practice along with a discussion of associated clinical manifestations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment principles and methods. Individual chapters are devoted to patterns of qi deficiency, blood deficiency, hot and cold blood, blood statis, and bleeding as well as the tongue signs related to these disorders. The book also discusses associated eight parameter and organ theory, with many helpful summary tables at the end of each chapter.

"As qi and blood are basic elements of Chinese medicine, the differentiation of qi and blood disorders is one of the main diagnostic methods. Atlas of Blood and Qi Disorders in Chinese Medicine provides photographic images of real cases along with detailed clinical manifestations, diagnostic procedures, treatment principles, and methods. I am delighted to recommend this publication to those in the medical profession as well as students, practitioners, and others interested in traditional Chinese medicine."

Jin Gui Yao Lue - Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Coffer
WISEMAN Nigel, WILMS Sabine and FENG Ye

Publication due mid 2012 650 pp

The Jīn Guì Yào Lǜe ("Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Coffer"), like its sister volume the Shāng Hán Lùn ("On Cold Damage"), is a gem reconstituted from fragments of a lost text called the Shāng Hán Zá Bìng Lùn ("On Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases") by indisputably the most brilliant medical mind that China ever produced, the Hàn Dynasty physician Zhāng Jī. Exerting an influence on the development of Chinese medicine unmatched by any other medical scholar, Zhāng integrated the then relatively new theories of systematic correspondence of the Nèi and Nànjīng with an already vast practical knowledge knowledge in the use of medicinals. Such was his brilliance that it was not fully recognized by Chinese physicians until centuries later in the Sòng Dynasty, when Zhāng's combination of theory and practice became the mainstream in Chinese medicine that survived centuries of scrutiny from successive generations of medical scholars and buttressed traditional medicine against the challenge of Western in the twentieth century. Combining theoretic etiologies with detailed diagnosis and skillfully devised treatments, Zhāng’s work has left an indelible print on traditional medicine in China for nearly 2,000 years. A third of the most commonly used formulas in Chinese medical practice today were devised by Zhāng Jī.

The Jīn Guì Yào Lǜe ("Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Coffer") covers diseases other than external contractions dealt with in the Shāng Hán Lùn, including lung diseases, water swelling, dissipation-thirst, impediment (bì), summerheat stroke, mounting diseases, and gynecological diseases, to name just a few. The first chapter and explains the etiology of disease and treatment principles, while the last discusses food prohibitions. (For this item please quote stock ID 30481)
