This story is set in Vancouver's Chinatown at the turn of the 20th Century and follows the life of a servant girl from China who longs to bring her mother and brother to join her in the New World. The story begins in South China where Yenyee and her family live. One night her fisherman father vanishes in a ferocious storm at sea and Yenyee is sent across the Pacific to the New World to be a servant. In the poignant story, two worlds - China and North America - come together. Inspired by the Yip Sang collection held by the Vancouver Museum, the reader is taken on a magical voyage of love and forgiveness, of bravery and community. Paul Yee is one of Canada's finest writers for children. He was raised in Vancouver and has worked in the archives at the Vancouver Museum. He is a past winner of the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature (1996) for Ghost Train. He now lives in Toronto. Grace Lin is a widely published illustrator living in Los Angeles, California. She has illustrated four children's books including Round as a Mooncake and Dim Sum Means Little Dishes.
