Diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the process of examining the body to diagnose disease and differentiate patterns under the guidance of the fundamental theories of TCM. It is a bridge that connects the basics of TCM with all branches of clinical medicine and includes inspecting the symptoms or manifestations, analysing the changes, understanding the pathomechanisms, and predicting the transformation of diseases.

TCM diagnosis consists of two major areas of study, ‘examination and testing’ (診 zhên) and ‘decision and judgment’ (断 duàn). Examination and testing techniques are used to collect information from the patient. Decision and judgment uses this information, which is sorted, analysed, synthesised, and reasoned on the basis of TCM theory.

This book is organised around the ‘four pillars’ of TCM diagnosis: inspection, inquiry, listening and smelling, and palpation. In this text, each aspect is explained in a clear and systematic manner, with generous use of tables and illustrations. This is followed by a series of review questions for deeper understanding.

A comprehensive self-examination consisting of 200 multiple choice questions, with a separate key to the answers, tests the reader’s understanding of the important points of each aspect of diagnosis. About the Authors
Qiao Yi, M.D. (China), M.P.H., L.Ac., is a graduate of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1987), and received a Masters degree in Public Health from U.C.L.A. She served as clinical director at both Emperor’s College and SAMRA University, and as Associate Dean and Academic Dean at Yo San University and Emperor’s College. Dr. Qiao has been teaching TCM courses since 1991 at schools in Southern California, where she was also involved with curriculum development. She also served as commissioner for the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) for eight years. In addition to teaching, Dr. Qiao is engaged in acupuncture research at Cedar Sinai Hospital, and maintains a private practice in Los Angeles.

Al Stone, L.Ac., D.A.O.M., graduated from Emperor’s College with a Masters in TCM (1997) and a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (2007). He is best known as the founder of the website acupuncture.com. Dr. Stone maintains a significant online presence at gancao.net, and an internal medicine practice that focuses on Chinese herbal medicine in Santa Monica. He also teaches classes and supervises in the clinic at Emperor’s College. Dr. Stone has been editing TCM texts since 1995, including The Treatment of Lupus, Scleroderma, and Dermatomyositis with TCM, published by People’s Medical Publishing House in Beijing.
