Our hands are the most important 'tool' for physical therapy. Nothing can match the ease and effectiveness of 'hands-on' touch! The Samurai programme was originally developed by Karin Kalbantner-Wernicke and Thomas Wernicke for school children. The exercises presented here have been adapted specifically for the treatment of older people, but can easily be used to treat any adult.

These quick and simple exercises can be carried out by anyone working with older people, whether individually or in groups. They can be used effectively with 'hale and hearty' elderly people or with those in an old people's home suffering dementia. Care workers, volunteers, exercise trainers and Shiatsu practitioners but also gamily members who want to support elderly relatives, will all find that these exercises improve the quality of life of older people they work with - and are also inspiring for themselves.

The wonderful thing about Samurai-Shiatsu treatment is that everybody benefits. Both the elderly person who is relaxed and stimulated and the carer (or family member) who can let go of the stress of daily functional care and appreciate the feeling of caring for another's body and soul with gentle 'hands-on' touch.

We encourage you to be creative, to expand your capacities and explore the potential of these exercises. Your engagement with your fellow human beings will, in the process, gain a completely new quality.
