Many of Shen Congwen's famous novels are written with the bacground of beautiful countryside in western Hunan. In the "Recollections of West Hunan（English Version)", he describes his childhood and the local people's lives, customs, love, legends, superstitions, uncivilized chivalry as well as their crude justice. Although sometimes these works make readers sad and fearful, most of them are full of pastoral atmosphere.
